About James
I have been studying chemistry for over 10 years, starting with earning my BSc in Honors Bioorganic Chemistry in 2017, followed by my PhD in Chemistry in 2023. I have continued to work as a postdoctoral fellow and a research scientist at a world-renowned chemistry contract research organization, so I stay up to date on groundbreaking chemistry while also using the fundamentals on a day-to-day basis. During my PhD, I had the opportunity of being a TA for both lab courses and classroom courses for 4 years, so I know what it takes to succeed at the university level. In the lab, I taught students general lab techniques and safety considerations, as well as regularly going over the specifics of the experiments and reaction mechanisms. As a course TA, I held weekly tutorials with students where we solved problems and I answered questions, as well as answering questions from students by email as they came up during the semester.

My approach is problem based first and foremost. Most teachers take exam questions directly from textbooks, homework assignments, and previous exams so tackling assigned problems is the easiest way to prepare for exams and ace your finals. From working through problems together and understanding the fundamental principles behind them, not only will my approach prepare you for any upcoming exams, but will give you a solid understanding of the material moving forward so you won't have to cram and spend hours memorizing. When you understand a problem intuitively, you won't even have to think about it when you're feeling the pressure during an exam, you'll just know what to do.
Typically, before a lesson I will ask you specifically what subjects you would like to go over and if you have any assigned problems. Before our lesson I will personally solve all of the problems you have been assigned so I am 100% familiar with the material you are working on and once our lesson begins we won't have to waste any time going over anything. I will also ask you to give an honest effort to solving the problems before our lesson as I believe the best way to learn is by doing. Then, we will go over the solutions together and work through any problems you may have encountered. Finally, we can end the session with any other questions you may have and plan for the next session.
My chemistry lessons are for high school students and university students. I am comfortable teaching general chemistry up to the university level and advanced organic chemistry to senior undergraduate students. I am also comfortable teaching high school level math and physics.
