About Shelley
I am a Cambridge-educated languages tutor and qualified teacher (PGCE), with over a decade of experience teaching French and Spanish across secondary and sixth form education. I have been a qualified teacher since 2012 and have held roles including Head of French at a top independent school.
I support students across GCSE, A-Level and university preparation, including Oxbridge and competitive university applications in the UK and abroad. My focus is on developing strong exam technique, confident communication and clear academic writing, helping students achieve high levels of attainment in both French and Spanish.
Alongside school-based teaching, I have extensive experience as a private tutor, working with a wide range of learners including scholarship candidates, bilingual students, undergraduates, and adult learners. I also have experience supporting students transitioning to higher education and developing advanced academic skills.
In addition to languages, I have a creative background in fashion and textiles, having completed a UAL Level 3 Diploma in Fashion Design (Distinction), which reflects my broader interest in creativity and the arts.
I aim to provide structured, targeted tuition that helps students make consistent progress and achieve their academic goals with confidence.

My teaching approach is structured, responsive and highly personalised. I begin by identifying each student’s current level, strengths and areas for development, then design lessons that are focused on closing gaps while steadily building confidence and independence. I take a warm and friendly approach, ensuring students feel comfortable and confident, while maintaining high academic standards and clear lesson objectives.
A typical lesson is clearly structured but flexible. We may begin with a short recap of previous learning or targeted retrieval practice, followed by focused teaching on a key grammar or skills area. This is then applied through exam-style questions, translation, speaking practice or written tasks, depending on the student’s goals. I finish each session with clear feedback and guidance on what to consolidate before the next lesson.
I place strong emphasis on developing both accuracy and understanding. Rather than relying on memorisation alone, I help students understand how the language works so they can apply it confidently in unfamiliar contexts. This is particularly effective for exam preparation at GCSE and A-Level, where success depends on both precision and adaptability.
For more advanced learners, including those preparing for university or Oxbridge-style study, lessons focus on analytical thinking, essay structure, translation accuracy and the development of fluent, academically appropriate expression.
What sets my approach apart is the balance between structure and adaptability. Every lesson is planned with clear objectives, but also adjusted in real time based on the student’s needs. This ensures consistent progress while keeping learning focused, efficient and purposeful. Students can expect clear explanations, well-organised sessions and a strong focus on measurable improvement over time.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Shelley worked in my department, in a highly competitive organisation. She is really sharp and her attention to details is excellent. Above all, she is kind and always positive in the way she teaches. Very proficient in all the latest software, as well as original in her creativity, I highly recommend her. She'll deliver brilliant classes, whatever the level, leading to above average results in public exams and tests.
As a family we have worked with Shelley for a number of years now. My son is in year 10 and she also tutored his older sisters when they were taking their GCSEs. My children enjoy her lessons and really trust her as she knows the exam boards really well. I will use her services again when my youngest is ready to take GCSEs.
Shelley really knows her subjects and she explains things in a way that is easy to understand. She is patient, encouraging and very good at helping you work through difficulties. I always felt supported whilst also being challenged to improve.
