  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My journey into the medical field started with a personal encounter that left a lasting impact. My grandmother's diagnosis of type II diabetes during my adolescence opened my eyes to the world of healthcare. Witnessing the compassionate approach to her care of her doctors was a defining moment for me. One doctor in particular, Dr. Ramzi stood out. He not only addressed her medical needs by providing her with a personalized treatment plan, but also acknowledged her anxieties and fears, providing a level of care that went beyond the textbook. This experience ignited a spark in me, revealing the profound impact a physician can have on a patient's life, not just physically but emotionally as well.

Acting on this initial spark, I enrolled in my high school co-op program. I experienced firsthand the diverse roles within healthcare, including pharmacy, physiotherapy, and medicine. My exposure to these roles led me to believe that a career in medicine would be ideal, as it would allow me to combine my interest in the human body with my desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives.

This passion drove me to enroll in Western University's Medical Sciences Program for my undergraduate degree, where I specialized in physiology and pharmacology. It was here that I immersed myself into the intricate workings of the human body, and the delicate balance of our biological systems.

Now, as a medical student at McMaster University, I'm constantly reminded of the immense responsibility and privilege that comes with this profession. I'm eager to continue learning, to refine my skills, and to one day become a physician who not only heals but also empowers patients to take charge of their health. I aspire to be a lifelong learner, staying at the forefront of medical advancements so that I can provide the best possible care to my future patients. Ultimately, my goal is to leave a positive mark on the world, just as Dr. Ramzi did for my grandmother, and to contribute to the ongoing quest for better health outcomes for all.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

My passion for medical admissions stems from understanding how crucial this process is in shaping future healthcare professionals. Having gone through the rigorous journey of medical school admissions myself, I've developed a deep appreciation for the skills and qualities this process aims to identify in candidates. For me, navigating medical admissions was not just about getting into school-it was a transformative journey that honed my resilience, critical thinking, and empathy.

One notable memory from my own experience stands out: the overwhelming feeling of preparing for medical school interviews. I was drowning in a sea of potential questions and scenarios. But reaching out to mentors who had been through the process was a game-changer. They didn't just offer advice on how to answer questions; they shared their own personal experiences, making the whole ordeal feel less daunting and more achievable. Their support was invaluable, and it's a big part of why I'm so passionate about paying it forward.

I was fortunate to be accepted into several prestigious medical schools, including the University of Toronto (8.3% acceptance rate), Dalhousie University (10.3% acceptance rate), and McMaster University (4.1% acceptance rate), where I am currently a medical student. These acceptances were not just a testament to my hard work, but they also provided me with a deeper understanding of the intricacies and demands of the admissions process.

What truly fuels my passion for medical admissions is the opportunity to mentor and guide aspiring medical students. I've had the privilege of working with numerous students, each as anxious and determined as I once was. To help them succeed, I employ a tailored approach that caters to their individual needs. For some, this involves intensive MMI preparation, where we delve into ethical dilemmas, communication skills, and critical thinking scenarios. For others, it's about conquering the CASPer test, where we focus on situational judgment, professionalism, and empathy. And for many, it's about mastering the MCAT, where we break down complex scientific concepts, hone test-taking strategies, and build confidence.

For example, I once worked with a student who, like me, struggled with the MMI format. We spent countless hours practicing, dissecting each scenario, and refining their communication skills. Witnessing their transformation from a hesitant interviewee to a confident candidate who secured a spot in their dream school was incredibly rewarding.

By sharing my knowledge, experience, and the lessons I've learned, students are empowered to not only succeed in the admissions process but also discover their own potential and passion for medicine. This is a commitment I deeply value, having walked in their shoes and understanding the immense pressure and high stakes involved
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

What I love most about tutoring is the opportunity to make a real difference in my students' lives. It's about more than just improving their academic performance; it's about empowering them to become confident, resilient learners.

One of my most fulfilling experiences was working with a student who was struggling with the CARS section of the MCAT. This student was initially discouraged by their low practice scores, but through personalized strategies, such as targeted reading comprehension exercises and timed practice passages, coupled with consistent support, we were able to transform their understanding of critical analysis. Consequently, the student's test score jumped from a 125 (60th percentile) on their first full length to a 129 (95th percentile) on their actual MCAT exam. Seeing them achieve a remarkable improvement on the actual exam was incredibly gratifying, not just because of the score but because of the newfound confidence they gained in their abilities.

Another student I worked with faced significant test anxiety. We went beyond just content review and delved into techniques like mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques, and positive self-talk to help them manage their stress. It was inspiring to witness their transformation from a place of anxiety to one of calm and focus.

What makes me a "Superprof" is my holistic approach to tutoring. I believe that academic success is intrinsically linked to emotional well-being. I strive to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and embracing challenges.

I utilize a wide range of resources, from official practice tests to customized study guides, to cater to each student's unique learning style. But my most valuable tool is the ongoing dialogue I maintain with my students. I constantly seek feedback to understand their needs, adjust my approach, and celebrate their progress.

Ultimately, my goal is to ignite a passion for learning within my students. I want them to walk away from our sessions not just with improved knowledge, but also with the skills and confidence to tackle any challenge they may face. It's the joy of witnessing their growth, both academically and personally, that drives me every day.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Dr. Stavraky, my physiology professor at Western University, wasn't just a teacher; he was a storyteller. He had this extraordinary ability to weave the complexities of the human body into narratives that captivated and inspired. His passion for physiology was infectious, and it sparked a curiosity in me that extended far beyond the classroom.

But it wasn't his lectures that made the most lasting impact; it was his dedication to his students. When I encountered difficulties in his course and received a disheartening midterm grade, he didn't dismiss my struggles. Instead, he offered to provide me with additional support through one-on-one sessions.

During these office hours, he took the time to understand my unique challenges, tailoring his explanations and offering invaluable study strategies. He reminded me that "Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow," a phrase that I now repeat to my own students facing setbacks. However, these sessions weren't just about clarifying concepts; they were a masterclass in critical thinking. He would pose thought-provoking questions that forced me to connect the dots and see the bigger picture. He taught me not just how to memorize facts, but how to think like a scientist. And his constant encouragement fueled my determination to succeed.

By the time the final exam arrived, I wasn't just prepared; I was excited to prove to myself what I had learned. My improved performance was a testament to his guidance and belief in me. But more importantly, his mentorship had a profound impact on my approach to learning and my desire to help others.

As a tutor, I strive to emulate Dr. Stavraky's compassion, patience, and individualized approach. I see echoes of his teaching style in my own methods, whether it's using relatable analogies to explain complex concepts or tailoring my approach to each student's learning style. And just as he did for me, I aim to instill confidence in my students, reminding them that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success as a tutor are built on three core principles that, together, help my students achieve their academic goals and develop a love for learning.

First, I focus on building rapport and trust. A strong tutor-student relationship is key to effective learning. It's essential to understand not just a student's academic needs, but also who they are as individuals. I invest time in understanding each student's unique aspirations, fears, and challenges, fostering a safe space for open communication and vulnerability. By sharing my own experiences with the admissions process, I build trust and empathy, enabling students to overcome obstacles with confidence. For example, when a student felt overwhelmed by the MCAT, I took the time to listen and reassured them that it's normal to feel that way, citing my own experiences with exam preparation. I offered strategies for managing test anxiety, such as mindfulness techniques and a structured study schedule. This not only helped reduce their stress but also built trust, allowing them to approach the exam with more confidence.

Second, I emphasize a growth mindset, believing that abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. The medical school admissions process is a journey of growth and development. For example, one of my students expressed frustration with the slow progression they had been experiencing in the CARS section of the MCAT. I reinforced the idea that their abilities were not fixed but could improve with persistent effort and practice. Together, we broke down challenging passages, identified areas for improvement, and set small, achievable goals. By celebrating even the smallest victories, such as accurately interpreting a tough passage, we reinforced the idea that progress comes from effort and perseverance. This approach not only boosted their confidence but also motivated them to embrace challenges as part of their learning journey.

Finally, I tailor my instruction to each student's unique needs. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching methods accordingly. For instance, with a visual learner struggling with MCAT concepts, I use digital tools to create colorful diagrams and mnemonic devices to help them memorize key information. For other students who learn best through interactive practice, I incorporate virtual whiteboard sessions where we can solve problems together in real-time. Using technology to cater to their learning styles ensures that each student can engage with the material in a way that makes sense to them. This personalized approach not only makes the subject more accessible, but also sparks their interest.

By cultivating rapport, fostering a growth mindset, and tailoring instruction to individual needs, I empower my students to achieve their medical school admissions goals and cultivate a lifelong passion for learning.
