About Alisdair
Education has always been part of who I am. Even when I was at University, I was helping out in After School clubs, bringing on the next generation. I did seriously consider becoming a teacher before embarking on another path. When I've sought feedback as to why my past classes were so popular, it generally boiled down to the following: I put everyone at ease, and I have a knack for making difficult things easy to understand. "I never thought I could... but thanks to you" was the style of many comments. I had a mantra of "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers!" which encouraged students to speak up when they couldn't follow something. Another common compliment was that I didn't follow a "standard script", I got right to the heart of what people needed to know.

I aim to make learning fun, engaging, and successful! I have always said: "give me an enthusiastic student over raw talent any day!" There is no typical lesson, because no two students are the same. However, I can give you a general overview: One of the first things I will seek to do is assess the type of player you are. This doesn't just mean "how good are you already?" - it means your playing style; how you like the game to be played, and what methods work best for you.
Background - When you hire me as a tutor, my assistance doesn't start and end with the lessons you're buying. I will take an active interest in your progress - even when you're not at the board, I will be looking into your past games, coming up with notes and a plan for the next lesson. You won't JUST hear from me during lessons; the next email with some additional content could be just around the corner!
Openings - While I don't fall into the trap of trying to substitute skill with superior theoretical knowledge, I do aim to make sure you go into a game better prepared than your opponent. I've heard that openings are what put people off taking up the game seriously - it shouldn't be! Don't worry; there is no ridiculous mountain of variations you have to memorise (unless you want to learn the Najdorf!) - I will work on your understanding of the strategic goals within openings, so you can understand the whole game. While openings CAN be overvalued, it is still true that roughly 70-80% of my wins are at least partially due to understanding the opening better. I almost-always out-prepare opponents, and with my help, you will too!
Concepts - these could be more attributable to the middlegame or endgame, and what we work on will depend on you. I will look at your game for areas to work on, and tailor our lessons accordingly.
Student suggestion - What's the point in trying to make you sit through a complicated endgame study if what YOU really want to do is learn some opening traps? I will have some suggestions of what we should work on of course, but your view is important to me. This is a collaboration.
Who do my lessons work best for? I believe I have something to offer to Beginners, Intermediates, and even Advanced learners. I can make you a better player than I am; that's for sure. As my chess coach once said to his class: "You will be able to beat me one day. If you can't, I haven't done my job right!" The general assumption is that lessons last (about) an hour, but we can alter that given your needs. I won't cut you off or charge more if we over-run, and I will give you the full value with more material if we get through a lesson quicker than planned.

Alisdair has been a great encouragement for me as I recovered my teenage enthusiasm for chess many years on! He is very adaptable and can reorient his lessons depending on a student's interest and aptitude. He does his homework on each student to address weaknesses and build on strengths, and I was lucky to benefit from his skills through a personal connection. He was kind enough to take me through unfamiliar approaches and teach different lines of attack and defence in a way that I could take in, adapting to my speed and helping with appropriate techniques where I struggled to remember things at first. He made complicated things easy to take in and understand! When it comes to going above-and-beyond, you can't ask more than his willingness to analyse my games with me and sending emails with a detailed breakdown of games from other chess players to help illustrate concepts I was struggling with.
Alisdair helped me by identifying my personality as a chess player, recognising things that were preferences of mine and pinpointing problems (e.g. I'm happier being strategic than aggressive, but was overly risk-averse). I also have a much better understanding of general principles that have improved my game and my confidence.Alisdair reviewed one of my recent games with me, identifying mistakes and helping me understand their consequences. He not only showed me better alternative moves but also helped me understand them. He finished off by teaching me some endgame techniques and practising them with me. He also matched me up with a player of similar level, whom he also teaches, to play with. Alisdair is patient, easy to understand and has an empowering balance between explaining and guiding you to figure things out yourself, and a great sense of humour to boot. I’ll be sure to be back for more.
