Being a private tutor and giving private classes is an exciting job. However, during the first meeting with your students, it is absolutely essential to make a good impression. This will eventually allow you to break the ice and begin a dialogue to get to know the person you are going to teach. This discovery will allow you to better understand your student and more effectively convey your knowledge. In this article. Many teachers make the mistake of introducing themselves but not letting the student introduce themselves. This is a real mistake on your part, because a first meeting is based on the crucial establishment of a contact between two people. It is important to create, right from the beginning, a trusting relationship between equals, not forgetting to establish the expected respect that the student owes you, and that you in turn owe them.
Don’t hesitate to talk about your background, your interests, what makes you want to teach, in an effort to reduce the distance between teacher and the student. So that your students have the chance to introduce themselves, you can either do a round table, if you give private lessons in a group, or give a short questionnaire in order to get to know them better and to identify their objectives. This will allow you to break the ice and create a dialogue to help you get to know your student. You can also occasionally take a break in your class, to get to know your student(s) a little more.
Prepare for questions that the student or parents may ask you
A first meeting is always stress provoking, even as a teacher. For this, we recommend that you prepare responses for the questions that the student or parents may ask you. This will allow you to feel more confident on the day itself. You won’t be searching for what to say, because you will have prepared in advance and you will thus be able to respond to questions in a confident and professional way.
Relax and break the stereotype
As a student, it is not always that enjoyable to spend time with a teacher. Being a tutor is not an easy job, because your student is not necessarily willing to work with you, as the request often comes from parents in order to improve academic result.
So, during your first meeting, you must break the stereotype of the teacher who is too strict, establishing a more relaxed atmosphere. You are not in a classroom, but the goal is to give private lessons that will help students improve their skills and academic performance. It is therefore important that your student likes you, that he or she wants to see you again, and that they learns more easily in a relaxed environment. Being a private teacher is not the same as being a teacher in a school, and therefore you must keep in mind that the student teacher relationship will not be the same. You can afford to be more relaxed, understanding and easy going with your student, because you will not need to take care of the discipline. The more you have a close relationship with your student, the more they will want to work with you.
Being a private tutor is ultimately a very rewarding job where you get to share your knowledge in an intimate environment. There is no need to stress about your first class at home or in a group - simply follow our little tips and everything will run smoothly.
