About Steven

Hi, I'm Steven. I work as a Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham. I have a passion for all things science and mathematical. I have worked with and been successful in helping young people of all interests and abilities. I aim to bring out the best in children to help them achieve and feel a pride in what they do. I find this very rewarding and hope to find a way for different types of learners to make good progress.

I hope to provide support and guidance for pupils of all ages and abilities. I endeavour to gain the student's confidence so they are in a positive frame of mind, relaxed and enthusiastic to learn. I use a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning and make the lessons interesting and fun.
I tailor my tuition to the needs and expectations of my students.
I like to build confidence in my students. We all learn by practicing skills and "doing". The key to good teaching is providing lots of opportunity to develop ideas in a non-threatening environment and then giving quality feed-back with lots of next steps.
I always try to furnish my students with as wide a range of learning opportunities as possible.

About the lesson

I believe maths becomes much easier when students genuinely understand the reasons behind the methods they use. My lessons focus on building understanding, confidence, and problem-solving skills rather than simply memorising procedures.

As an approachable, friendly, and patient tutor, I tailor every lesson to the individual student's needs, pace, and goals. Whether you're preparing for exams, improving grades, or strengthening core skills, lessons are designed specifically for you.

A typical lesson includes:

Reviewing previous learning and addressing any difficulties.
Clear, step-by-step explanations of key concepts.
Guided practice with support and feedback.
Independent problem-solving to build confidence.
A summary of progress and areas to focus on next.
