About Stephen
I got my degree in photojournalism from Metro State University of Denver in 2012, before it was even a University, and I have worked in freelance and staff positions around the world since. In 2013 I taught a class in photojournalism for non-visual journalists at the Moscow Society of Journalists in Russia. In 2015 I photographed the earthquake in Nepal. I've been helping learning photographers through internships and mentorships for at least the last ten years. Currently, I am the Photo Editor and sole photojournalist at the Denver Gazette.
While my work, and therefore my teaching, of course, skew heavily towards journalism, my expertise and work history range from weddings to portraits to sports and even large format analog photography.

I like to start with what you already know. No two students are starting in the same place. If you've never picked up a camera, or you've never taken it out of auto mode, that's ok! I'll meet you wherever you are, from learning what all the dials and buttons on your camera are for, to the exposure triangle, and getting that flash off your camera and onto a tripod. As we get hands on practice with the camera, we'll also learn about the ethics of photography and editing, and look through a number of historic and modern photographers to help develop your eye and understand color theory and framing. My lessons can help anyone from the bare beginner to the college senior. We move at your pace.
