About Joshua
My lessons are drawn from my own experience of having plays produced at London theatres like the Almeida, Soho, Yard & Orange Tree, as well as across the US. Teaching for screen will involve sharing what I learnt from the BBC Writers room, and working with international production companies & writing on a US TV show. My insights into writing for audio are drawn from writing plays for BBC Radio 3 & 4 and American Radio channels. I am currently developing feature film projects with MMXX films and UFA studios. My latest Offie-nominated play GIGI & DAR is running at the Arcola Theatre until 2nd November 2024, directed by Kathryn Hunter. For a list of my stage/screen/radio credits please see here: (concealed information) My plays are published by Nick Hern Books. (concealed information) I have an MFA in Theatre Directing from Birkbeck college and trained in acting at Guildhall, and at Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris. As an actor I have worked at the Royal Court, Tricycle theatre (now Kiln), and the BBC. I've taught acting and playwriting in secondary schools, youth groups, to children with life-limiting illnesses, psychiatric patients, prisoners, and professional writers. I love to meet artists and aid them in their journey - whether that be acting or writing or both!

I teach acting and writing. Acting - I draw on experiences from training at Guildhall and with Philippe Gaulier + working with actors as varied as Ade Edmondson (The Young Ones), Danielle Vitalis (Smothered), Adam Godley (Lehman Trilogy), Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things) & Paul Chahidi (Death of Stalin.) There are many routes to finding a performance. We will consider a range of techniques, identify goals and work towards them - whether that be a drama school audition or acting coaching for emerging & experienced actors. Writing - The lessons will be a mixture of practical exercises and conversation in order to develop your project. No play or writer is the same and thus each lesson will be designed to meet the writer and project's needs. I offer exercises that aid in the development of a premise; dialogue; character development & structure. I have written professionally for stage, screen and radio and can share insights into what those different mediums offer. You may sign up to a series of lessons where I guide you through the process from idea to writing a first draft, or you may require one-off lessons. These could range from consulting on an existing script, to structuring a showreel or brainstorming ideas for a feature.

I am a screenwriter who always takes my early drafts to Josh Azouz. His gentle, smart and rigorous approach means I always leave our one-on-one sessions full of new ideas, questions and inspiration to dive back into my work.
Daniella Isaacs (Writer/Director of BBC's People Who Knew Me - featuring Rosamund Pike, Hugh Laurie, Kyle Soller and Alfie Enoch).I wanted to go to drama school and Josh’s help on my monologues gave me the confidence to go and apply. This year I am starting at Bristol Old Vic!
I've always had a blast working with Josh Azouz. His warm presence and imaginative acting techniques gave me the confidence to be braver in my performances and to trust my instincts.
Danielle Vitalis (Actor, Sky series Smothered)I am a writer and performer and have worked with Josh Azouz on my plays both in a one & one context and in the rehearsal room. His keen dramaturgical eye and range of practical exercises have been invaluable in helping me develop my craft both as a writer and as an actor.
nickcassenbaum.comI know Josh as a playwright and theatre director. Josh’s workshop with the MFA Theatre Directing students was inspiring and provocative. It struck a good balance between insight into how to write plays and collaborate with a director, alongside practical writing and directing exercises. Josh has an engaging manner which creates a safe space for students to share their work.
Prof Rob Swain, Birkbeck University of London
Josh gave an outstanding online workshop to a group of thirty 18-25 year olds on an acting course I was running at the National Youth Theatre. He enabled the group to unlock their creativity and imagination in a really engaging and exciting way, using a series of brilliant writing exercises I had never come across before. He also delivered a number of in person workshops with a group of Year 10 students who had limited experience to theatre. He was able to work with with a range of young people from different background expertly, with the group instantly warming to his personable and playful demeanour.
Joshua was not just reliable, professional, talented and capable, he was also kind and empathetic. Working with sick children who were having gruelling treatment added many challenges to what was an already complicated programme, noting that the playwright sessions were held online. Joshua had great patience and understanding and went out his way to ensure the children all felt involved with the creation of a script. The end product was impressive and that fact that it was presented virtually at the same time, so the children and their families could watch it together, made it extra special. I strongly recommend Joshua.
