About Ryan
I graduated from Balwyn High School in 2023, with an ATAR of 98.85, and was part of the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Class. This enabled me to take VCE English Language 3/4 a year earlier than is normally the case. I received the school's Subject Award for English Language in 2022, having being internally named Rank 1, having averaged 97% across Unit 3 and 100% across Unit 4. As a result, I ended up with a raw score of 48 in English Language.
I am currently completing a Bachelors of Commerce at the University of Melbourne, looking to major in Economics and Finance. I also intend on pursuing a Masters of Engineering, afterwards, so I am taking tertiary level Calculus and Linear Algebra. Together with scaled scores of 45+ in VCE Specialist Maths, I believe I have sufficient experience in teaching both fundamental and complex mathematical concepts.
Outside of academics, I really enjoy my sports (mainly soccer and cricket), as well as my music. I primarily play saxophone (alto, but have regularly played the baritone for the school's stage band), but I also have recently been inspired to teach myself piano (after many years of neglect!)
For me, the greatest teachers were always those who were willing to go that extra mile, to understand the learning styles and thinking processes of each individual student. They have dedicated more time than is technically required of them, to ensure that the most key concepts have been understood, and their students can feel confident to go and apply them in the pressure moments. As such, these traits are ones that I look to emulate in my own lessons, because I also hold the same passion and desire to share my knowledge with others. One of the greatest joys, personally, is seeing another person's face light up when they finally understand the concepts you have been teaching them. Seeing such enlightment, is what drives me to keep teaching.

The key to succeeding mathematics, at any level, is to first understand why you are tackling certain concepts. Attempting to do questions without knowing their specific purpose can often be the biggest barriers to establishing the necessary foundations for your maths skills. As such, in my lessons, there is a strong focus on learning the "whys", before the "hows".
Once the "whys" are answered, then it is all about how we go about learning the "hows". Overloading practice questions has often been a method touted as the way to go, but in truth, this can only get you so far. It is far more important for students to take time and reflect upon their errors, as the ability to explicitly realise why they have done something wrong, and understand how they can improve, is worth more than a million practice questions. Lessons will establish effective and regular error log routines, helping to build a learner that is not only reflective, but also confident in their abilities.
My lessons are all about trying to get even the least passionate mathematics students, to have an appreciation for the subject, because quite contrary to what is said by some of their classmates, having an interest in maths IS valuable. Numbers don't just happen to appear around us for no reason, and the earlier students can begin to respect their existence, the earlier they get exposed to the real world.
Having recently graduated from high school, I am quite familiar with both VCE Maths Methods and VCE Specialist Maths, having achieved scaled scores of 45+. Moreover, as I intend on pursuing a Master of Engineering, I am taking tertiary level calculus and linear algebra, so I am quite confident that I am able to translate my experience to younger students.
Lessons are for Prep - Year 10s, whether students are looking for general classroom/homework assistance, or looking for extension material beyond their years.

Dedicated a lot of time and patience to teaching me English. He was thorough with his explanations and always made sure that I could understand everything in depth.
Ryan Ngo tutored my son in English. He was great, very patient and if my son needed further explanation, he had no issues helping him.
