About Gerald
From my experience as a tutor in Algebra for immigrant students (some with no English and just counting as a math skill) I know that difficulties with Algebra are caused by a weak foundation in Arithmetic; specifically, fractions and division. And difficulties with fractions and division are rooted in weak multiplication skills. A student that makes a 100 on the Khan Academy 4th Level End of Course should cruise to a B in Algebra in most public schools because they can SEE the values changing in a function without constantly referring blindly to the calculator with a memorized button-pushing routine. 40 years of making and losing money in various businesses proved to me the value of math and reading skills as fundamental training for critical thinking. To take my own advice, I started in 2nd Grade and have worked all the grades through 61% of Trigonometry with incidental work in Pre-Cal (30%) and Statistics (34%) as of July 11, 2022; this was done with breaks as long as 6 months between work sessions and progress really slowed down during Algebra 2; I taught Algebra 2 as the teacher of record and was appalled at all the skills that I had skipped so the kids could pass the class. I wasn't obsessed with the project, but I did work on all the problems. It was humbling to see how awful my test-taking skill had become but I learned the connections between Arithmetic and higher math content. For study habits, I refer students to the book What Smart Students Know. I have a 1-page synopsis that I send to all my students. For Reading/English work, I use the First and Last technique and Teach to Learn regimen. Helping you with your homework assignments is a weak approach to improving your GRADES; we will spend most of our time together improving your math skills. Your goals should include getting college credits in the last one or two years of high school; this will save somebody many thousands of dollars in tuition. Even if your goal is trade school or straight into the job market, your advanced math skills will beef up your application and resume.

I spent 3 years as an Associate/Substitute Teacher in Houston ISD that included one long-term as an assistant teacher in a middle school science and one in the Physical Science/Biology section of a high school. I tutored Algebra I for 5 years to a primarily immigrant population then spent 1 year as a classroom teacher for Algebra II. Classroom teacher is not my cup of tea, but I have just loved the last three years tutoring one-on-one online and in-person.
In my opinion, general number sense is the first hurdle to clear in building a foundation of math skills. then add being able to do some basic mental arithmetic for estimating plus a clear understanding of the operations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Add to these the habit of checking your work and you have a solid foundation for math. This foundation allows a student's native critical thinking skills to easily make the transition to Algebra and Geometry.
Working math problems creates retention of the math skills much as writing complete sentences builds vocabulary and skillful use of syntax and grammar.
Most students/people who are "bad at math" or “not a writer/reader” or behind "grade level" will progress more rapidly if they improve their basic skills instead of memorizing steps in the more advanced skills; appreciating poetry is an advanced skill but writing complete sentences is basic. If a student needs help doing their homework, there are prerequisite skill deficiencies that must be addressed; for example, no amount of reviewing slope will overcome a lack of understanding fractions.
My degree in Finance from Texas A&M misled me into early career attempts in credit management, office manager, and insurance sales then a long stretch in retail and wholesale groceries. After an abortive stab at medical supplies, I went bust in my own uniform business. Tutoring was not my Plan A, more like Plan M, so I have plenty of real-life experiences to back up my insistence on attaining a solid basic education.
I use the Khan Academy with my students as a course platform (no charge to you) and as a reference for schoolwork. Please, use this link to join my class list: (concealed information)
I regularly use TED Talks, Quora, School Yourself, and Reference.com for enrichment activities.

Gerald is a wonderful tutor. He helped my son with maths in middle school. He improved my son's understanding and grade in maths. My son had some gaps in his learning that made it very difficult for him. Gerald was patient, kind, thorough and attentive. He did not scroll on his phone when my son was doing work as some tutors we tried before Gerald did. Gerald understood that he had to start with the basics to build up my son's skills. And he didn't move on until my son was sure of what he was doing. He really got through to my son and they were working really well together. Gerald even arranged with my son's math teacher to be there to help my son during school hours. I can wholeheartedly recommend Gerald!
