About Gemma
I trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and have acted professionally for 20 years. I am represented as an actor by AHA and as writer by United Agents.
Theatre credits include 'As You Like It' & 'Children of the Sun' at the National Theatre, 'A Dead Body in Taos' for Fuel Theatre, 'Much Ado About Nothing' at Shakespeare's Globe, 'Nuclear' at the Young Vic, the world premiere of Mike Bartlett's 'Not Talking' at the Arcola, 'The Beach House' at the Park Theatre, 'Anything is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough' at the Southwark Playhouse, 'All My Sons' for the Rose, 'Wasted' by Kae Tempest at the Orange Tree and 'Rough Cuts' at the Royal Court. TV credits include Silent Witness, Luther, Misfits, Father Brown, Shakespeare and Hathaway, Holby City, Casualty, 1066 and Waking the Dead.
I am also a writer for stage and screen, chosen to be a member of the Orange Tree Writer's Collective 2021-22. My debut play Sunnymead Court opened at the Tristan Bates Theatre in September 2020. It follows the story of two queer women who live in tower blocks opposite each other and begin a relationship from the safety of their balconies during the first lockdown. It was nominated for an OFFIE for Best New Play and named as a 2020 hit show of the year by The Stage. My second play REWILD was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Playwriting 2021 and the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award 2023.

I’ve worked as an acting coach for over five years. I coach students for drama school & NYT entry, professional auditions & self-tapes, LAMDA exams and general acting technique. I’ve helped students get into RADA, LAMDA, Royal Welsh, RCS, Drama Studio, Guildhall, and the National Youth Theatre, and to obtain work across theatre, TV and film. Acting at its best is playful and intuitive, but only when underpinned by rigorous and detailed work. Whatever you're working towards, I can help you feel both rooted and free in performance.
DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITIONS
Drama school auditions can be daunting. It is tempting to practise your pieces over and over, but often when it comes to the audition, you find yourself 'stuck'. I can guide you through the process in a relaxed and constructive way. Selecting the right material is key, and together we can find the pieces that best showcase you and engage your imagination. We will then work to ensure you feel comfortable and prepared, but also able to play and have fun on the day. I sit on the audition panel for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and have taught at Arts Ed on the Acting BA, which has given me a unique insight into drama school application process. I have helped successful applicants to RADA, LAMDA, Royal Welsh, RCS, Drama Studio and Guildhall, as well as NYT.
AUDITION/SELF-TAPE PREP
Working towards an audition? I can help you break down a script and make bold, clear choices. We will also play with different versions of the scene, to ensure you're able to take direction and respond intuitively in the moment. I also offer a self-tape service. We can prepare and record your scenes together, and I'll provide direction between each take to ensure you're giving your strongest, most detailed performance. ACTING COACHING Are you an experienced performer looking to hone your skills? Just starting out and looking for basic training? Or would you like to explore acting as a way to improve confidence and have fun? Together, we can tailor a programme of work to suit you. Areas of work include self-taping and audition technique, voice, movement, character, text analysis, Shakespeare, and Stanislavski method. Sessions are offered on a one-off or long-term basis.
LAMDA/TRINITY
I have taught students of all ages and experience both the LAMDA and Trinity syllabus. The exams can supplement an active drama student's life, or if a pupil is new to drama, it can be a brilliant starting point in accessing acting and performance. I have worked with students with no prior experience of drama, introducing them to basic performance skills and techniques, as well as more experienced performers looking to develop through the higher grades.
"Sessions with Gemma are always inspiring. We pore over the script and I leave with a multitude of interpretations under my belt, leaving me confident to play in the room. I always make sure to book in before an audition and I know I’ll leave feeling challenged and with a clear understanding of the text. I can’t recommend working with Gemma enough." - Hebe, actor
"Gemma was a fantastic acting coach through my set of drama school auditions. She prepared me for every situation I may have in the audition room, yet still allowed me to play and feel ownership over my characters. I felt comfortable and confident going into my auditions after our sessions. I cannot recommend Gemma enough." - Emily, successful RADA applicant
"After my sessions with Gemma, I feel the most comfortable I’ve ever felt with monologues. I’m excited for what’ll happen in the room - she’s taught me how to keep flexible and malleable and for the first time I don’t feel TERRIFIED about auditioning. Highly recommend." - Alice, successful RWCMD applicant

Perfect! I loved working with Gemma. She is a very qualified teacher but more importantly a very empathetic warm human being. Gemma helped me with being way more specific in my acting which is something I struggled with and instantly noticed my tendency to project inwards instead of outwards. Although I didn’t get in drama school I believe I was very well prepared by Gemma and would book sessions with her if I had a call or audition either way.
Perfect! I prepared for my drama school applications with Gemma, and it was a truly great experience. She helped me uncover layers of detail in the characters we worked on, and it was fascinating to learn from someone who graduated from the Bristol Old Vic. Gemma is incredibly caring and has a clear understanding of exactly what a student needs to reach the next level. She supported me throughout the process and helped me find the right piece, which made a huge difference in my preparation.
Perfect! Gemma is an amazing teacher, my daughter has really enjoyed her lessons. She is very approachable and super experienced!
Perfect! Gemma is a fantastic teacher — kind, patient and highly professional. She helped My daughter build confidence quickly, and the lessons were always fun and well-structured. We would absolutely recommend her.
Perfect! Helped so much with drama school auditions! Would recommend to everyone
Perfect! Ive been having lessons with Gemma for over a year now and I could not recommend her any higher (I would if I could). Gemma is a fantastic teacher. She has so much knowledge about every part of acting that in a year I feel learnt an incredible amount, and about a wide variety of the aspects of acting that I wasn’t even aware of. Gemma also loves to keep things interesting and never spends too long on something and is a goldmine for interesting plays or characters to try and understand. She also has a great teaching manner, she is super lovely and gives direction in such a way that you feel that you weren’t ‘wrong’ but that there may be other scenarios, or sub-text or perspectives to a character or scene that just changes everything which is a great feeling. Also shes just great fun to talk to. Without a doubt I would recommend Gemma to anyone interested in acting and at any level
Perfect! I highly recommend Gemma if you need help with acting. She is an amazing teacher and helped me prepare for my monologue audition. Her lessons are engaging and fun whilst also being helpful. I got a successful audition after her help. Thank you again!
Perfect! Gemma has helped me massively with my goals of improving my acting ability, technical understanding and preparing my monologues for Drama School applications. She has provided a space where I’ve felt comfortable to make mistakes and encouraged me. The techniques she practiced with me and objectives she helped me find for my characters have given me an understanding for the craft I didn’t have before. I highly recommend her as she is a teacher who really cares and is willing to go the extra mile to get the best out of her students.
Perfect! Couldn't recommend Gemma enough! I booked lessons with her to help work on my monologues for drama school application and she was so helpful! Gemma gave me exercises to do to help me discover new things about my monologue and help me find my characters actions and intentions. She created a really nice relaxed environment to work in and I really looked forward to our sessions! She made me feel really happy to send my applications off , would definitely recommend.
Perfect! I have been working with Gemma for a year now and she has helped me to grow tremendously - our sessions are fun and informal but also incredibly focused; we delve deep into a speech, working on different exercises to help bring it to life. I always feel able to explore interpretations and discuss my ideas with her freely. It’s because of Gemma’s friendly and helpful guidance that I now feel enthused and confident in my ability to act and no longer scared by the thought of an audition or redirection. It’s also thanks to her that I received an offer from a federation drama school. If you’re thinking about applying and/or want to develop your craft, I cannot recommend Gemma enough to help you get there!
Perfect! I had approached Gemma for my son's LAMDA certification. From an early stage, she identified my son's strengths and weaknesses and worked with him to achieve the best outcome- Distinction in grade 4 LAMDA. Lessons were fun and constructive and my son really enjoyed them. :) I would highly recommend her.
Perfect! Gemma helped me to feel so much more confident with my audition pieces for drama school entry, giving advice and working through different exercises with me which really brought my speeches to life. She is a fantastic tutor who I'd recommend to anyone applying for drama school wanting both professional and friendly guidance.

Gemma is a compelling teacher! My 12 years old daughter is always in a happy mood after her lessons. Gemma is a true professional, she holds the attention and interest of my daughter, she also is very kind, easygoing and extremely patient. She is an intellectual and her inner grace and elegance is mesmerising. With her guidance my daughter passed LAMDA with distinction, Gemma’s help gave so much confidence but also lots of joy in preparation for the exam. Fully recommend this outstanding teacher!
I'm a professional actor and took some lessons with Gemma to help me build my confidence back up with auditioning and self-taping. She was such a wonderful, compassionate and knowledgeable tutor. I had a lot of insecurities around my work at the time and she was so supportive in her approach. I'm really grateful for those lessons and would highly recommend her. Thank you, Gemma!
Always recommend Gemma to my actor friends who are on the search for a new tutor. Gemma offers great direction, a range of exercises/techniques, and great advice as a result of her experience in the industry. Would thoroughly recommend!
Gemma is a wonderful acting tutor. I’ve learnt so much from Gemma, from prepping for drama school auditions to preparing for an audition professionally. I always come away from our sessions feeling more confident and prepared.
When I began working with Gemma I was a complete novice just beginning to get into acting; through Gemma’s help I went from not knowing anything to getting into Lamda’s 6 month foundation course 9 months later. She’s filled me with so much confidence and is really helpful and thorough when it’s time to break down the speeches we do. She also offers her space to do self tapes which is really helpful and generous. I seriously couldn’t recommend working with Gemma enough.
Gemma is a wonderful person and has been a great coach to work with. I prepared my Drama school monologues with her and got into the RWCMD the same year. She’s very thoughtful, fun and always looks for the enjoyment in the performance. Can’t recommend her highly enough!
I have worked with Gemma over many years as a co-educator and drama facilitator. She’s able to see the potential in every student she teaches and bring out their inner performer. She tailors her methods and approach to each new project she works on and student she works with. She devotes a lot of time and energy into planning her sessions so that they are cohesive and structured towards her and her students’ aims. Her dynamic, professional and personable approach mean you will be in the safest hands to nurture your talents and creativity.
Gemma is a wonderful coach. She effortlessly makes you feel at ease during the sessions and her methods provide you with the toolkit to organically create a truthful performance. I would, and have already highly recommended Gemma as a tutor.
I got into LAMDA because of Gemma’s diligent and supportive tutoring. Gemma is in my opinion the best drama tutor in the city and I will explain why!
1. Gemma is a hugely talented actor and writer themselves, ( I saw her show at the actors centre and it was just 10/10).
2. Her experience in being on auditioning panels means she has a wealth of knowledge about audition technique.
3. Her approach to acting is easy to follow and simple yet effective, it meant when I was in my first week of drama school I didn’t feel totally lost and had a good foundation to begin my training.
4. I discovered through the process the speeches you pick are half the battle, Gemma worked with me on a few and could pick up my vibe and what actually suited me pretty quickly as well as picking a piece that was active.
5. Gemma is super friendly and just lovely but you still do the work and all our sessions were super productive.
If you couldn’t tell by now I am GEMMA NO#1 FAN, all jokes aside I am hugely grateful to her and I spent so much money and time with the wrong tutors and if anyone can not copy my mistakes I would be so happy. Book Gemma!Having worked with Gemma as an actor, and having produced one of Gemma’s plays, I cannot recommend her highly enough. Working with her was a joy from start to finish. She is highly professional, conscientious, generous and insightful. Quite aside from that, she is one of the most talented actors and writers I know. As a tutor she will draw on all of these things, so any student who spends time with her is sure to learn a lot, and enjoy their time doing so.
I've worked with Gemma as an actor on a theatre production at the Park Theatre. From the rehearsal room to production, Gemma was the most calming, collaborative and playful person to be around. I couldn't help but be entirely in the moment when performing our duologues. Gemma performs with an ease that makes it so easy to connect with her. As a writer as well, her approach to text work and language is precise and instinctive. She is a total talent and any actor would have a huge amount to learn from her.
Gemma is an amazing teacher, who has helped me explore and develop my acting skills through plays, tv scripts, monologues and duologues. Gemma not only helps you find personal techniques to overcome specific problems within pieces you’re working on, using a range of techniques and exercises to improve your skills but also general problems within acting as a whole such as doubt and anxiety. Couldn’t recommend her enough!
I’ve worked with Gemma as an actor and couldn’t recommend her highly enough. She is thoughtful, inquisitive and playful. She delves into the text with laser like precision and jumps into improvisations with freedom and care. I couldn’t imagine a better acting coach.
Gemma is an intelligent and instinctive actor with an outstanding grasp of both modern and classical text.
Having worked with her and seen her on stage many times, I can’t recommend her highly enough; any student would be lucky to learn from her.I have been having weekly classes with a Gemma in preparation for drama school auditions. I have never felt more relaxed and myself going into an audition room. I have a newfound confidence in my monologues and my ability to be playful in the room
I trained with Gemma for three years at drama school and so have witnessed her talent, professionalism and commitment in all areas. We have worked together on many auditions and self-tapes, and it's always been really helpful and made me much more confident. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for audition prep or acting coaching in general.
Gemma helped me prepare for drama school auditions and I got in! She is a brilliant teacher and I couldn’t have done it without her
