About Ethan
I am an economics student at Cambridge. Previously, I was a Scholar at Winchester College, where I received Distinction 1 (=A**, (concealed information) in Maths, Further Maths and Economics, and a Distinction 2 (=A*) in History. 1 in STEP III (with one week's preparation). Grade for Part I Economics has not yet been released.
I love teaching, reading and learning. In my spare time, I learn extra mathematics (currently doing a PhD book on economic dynamics and an undergrad book on real analysis), read philosophy and run a philosophy page. My Statistics supervisor read an essay I wrote on the foundations of probability with his postgraduate friends, which was probably the highlight of this year. My current reading interests are in authoritarian regimes of the 20th century.

(1) Learn to solve problems, (2) read widely and, in some places, deeply, (3) learn exam technique. If you lack time for (1) and (2) do (3). In the long term, learning to solve problems will make you smart (and interesting!). If you don't read widely you'll be no more than a mathematician. To have insights into the world requires understanding more than maths! If you can only solve exam questions, then you will struggle in the interview, and if you get in, you will struggle on the course.
I also encourage reading a lot. Here's a brief tour of my favourite reads of the year. Favourite book? Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago for nonfiction, or Catch-22 for fiction). Hayek's 1944 and 1945 papers are worth a read. Minsky (1984, 1986) is dry, but informative. The Bank of England's 2014 Paper 'Money Creation in the Modern Economy' is very useful and debunks many myths about money creation. The Symposium is the most enjoyable Philosophy I have read, although it lacks any semblance of rigour. The Economist and The FT are the most informative sources I know, but are a bit dry. The Spectator, The Guardian and Guido Fawkes provide slightly more colourful and less reliable analysis, but are more fun to read.
I have a thorough grasp on the literature and insights supervisors and examiners want for Economics, and can give mock interview practices.
