About Matt
I am a material scientist, undertaking a PhD project in my 3rd year at Cambridge University. I have taught material science to undergraduate natural scientists in the first year for two years, with approximately 50% of my students achieving 1st class grades (with 100% pass rate). Since taking on the role there has been an increased uptake of natural scientists pursuing materials into their 2nd year. I have also taught science on a broader scale to children aged 8-16 at a summer camp in the USA.

My lessons are structured by firstly covering any homework or assignments from the previous session, followed by introducing the next topic, using alternative ways to convey the concepts where appropriate if the lesson or textbook content might be unclear. I also like to use visual aids where possible (whiteboards especially). I encourage plenty of questions from my students as it is imperative to me to keep the students engaged and interested and will also occasionally ask more speculative questions beyond the syllabus to encourage broader scale thinking of the topic, which can help nail the conceptual understanding. I aim to be highly approachable, make the topic as interesting as possibe (as I'm enthusiastic about science myself) and I'm used to tailoring my approach to suit the student's academic needs.
