About Christopher
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am the full-time Head of Instrumental Music at the Godolphin School in Salisbury, where I have worked since 2014. There, I work with piano pupils aged 7-19, who range in ability from beginner through to Grade 8. As the official school accompanist, I work with all the choirs, and also instrumental ensembles.
Since 2015 I have also been on the permanent staff at Junior Trinity, one of the UK's most coveted junior conservatoires. I teach Musicianship classes and piano, and also provide basic learning support to selected students.
My private teaching practice is thriving, and my students are aged 13 - adult.
Prior to the above I spent one year as the Richard Carne Junior Fellow in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, London, where I coached the undergraduate and postgraduate piano students, and assisted in curating performances.
I continue to freelance as a recitalist and concerto soloist: recent engagements included Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.2 with the Essex Symphony Orchestra, Mozart's D minor concerto K466 with the Hertford Symphony Orchestra, and the London premiere of Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir's 'Blue Green Hill' for mixed ensemble at the Wanamaker Playhouse in London. Other notable projects have included Bach's D minor keyboard concerto with Sian Edwards and the Milton Keynes City Orchestra, recitals for music societies across the UK, and composer collaborations leading to works being written for me and world premieres.
I have recorded 5 commercial CDs: 4 of these are for Toccata Classics, and are of the piano music of Ronald Stevenson (1928-2015) and Ronald Center (1913-73), as well as the complete music for Viola and Piano by Russian composer Grigori Frid (1915-2012). In addition, I have recorded a CD of violin and piano repertoire for Champs Hill Records. More information on these can be found at (concealed information)
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes: I have been checked prior to starting at both Godolphin and Junior Trinity.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied piano and violin back in my native Scotland before entering St Mary's Music School, Edinburgh aged 13. I took top honours in the Moray Piano Competition 2001 - I remains the youngest winner to this day. At 18 I entered the Royal College of Music in 2005 as a Foundation Scholar and studied for six years with Andrew Ball, gaining a First Class BMus (Hons), and the MMus and Artist Diploma with Distinction. I went on to be the Richard Carne Junior Fellowship in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance 2012-13.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a fully paid member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).

Hello, and thank you for visiting my profile here on The Tutor Pages! I'm a pianist and experienced teacher, working across two prestigious institutions and with a thriving private teaching practice here in Salisbury where I live.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Chris's main teaching focus is the piano, but also teaches Musicianship at Junior Trinity College of Music in London, and classroom music from Key Stages 3 to 5, Theory and Aural at the Godolphin School in Salisbury. Chamber Music coaching features prominently in his working life and a number of ensembles in his tutelage have progressed far in the Pro Corda National Schools Chamber Music Competition in the last few years.
Whilst insistent that music making be enjoyed and developed for its own sake, and as a way of enriching one's life, Chris regularly prepares and enters students for both ABRSM and Trinity College practical exams. He teaches all ages and abilities, and in 2017 guided his students towards successes in the ATCL (one student having achieved 92%) and LTCL performance diplomas - as well as a string of Distinctions in Grade exams.
Chris teaches his private students from 16:15 on weekdays at the Godolphin School, Salisbury, but from September 2018 offers tuition on the excellent Yamaha grand piano at Salisbury Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoons and evenings (though likely to extend teaching days subject to demand). In this capacity he offers weekly and fortnightly lessons in Music Theory (up to Grade 8), readily provides Aural coaching, and also mentors students studying for the GCSE and A-Level Music Performance papers.
Please contact him to find out more and discuss requirements.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I took a First Class BMus (Hons) from the Royal College of Music in 2009, where I studied with the British pianist Andrew Ball. Immediately I returned and completed the MMus with Distinction within 13 months and one year later was awarded the Artist Diploma in performance, also with Distinction.
- How much do you charge?
£45.00 - 60 minutes
£35.00 - 45 minutes
£25.00 - 30 minutes
For advanced students, I offer 90-minute lessons at £65.00.
- Where do you teach?
My teaching practice has been based at the Godolphin Schoo since September 2014l.
From Tuesday 4th September, I am able to offer piano lessons on the fine Yamaha grand piano at Salisbury Methodist Church. Lessons here will take place on Tuesday afternoons and evenings. More details available on request!
- When are you available?
I am available on Tuesday afternoons from 13:00 through until late evening, and subject to demand will be available on Wednesdays too from September 2018.
I'm more than happy to discuss your requirements and be flexible with the above times if that works for prospective students - please just get in touch.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All levels, ages 7+.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I have been studying with Chris now for about 2 and a half years and have now passed my Dip.LCM in April 2017, with good marks.
I am now studying for my ALCM examination with Chris. His approach to teaching is enthusiastic and encouraging, and with his expert knowledge brings out the best, I think in his pupils.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Chris as a teacher for all ages and abilities. Our daughter is not the most straightforward student and will only work hard for teachers she likes and who inspire her. Chris has been a motivational piano teacher and under his tuition for the last three and a half years she has achieved Distinctions at Grades 7 and 8. She always looks forward to his lessons and they are now working together towards her first Diploma.
Being both a soloist and a teacher don't always go hand-in-hand but Chris excels at both. He makes lessons both interesting and productive and clearly enjoys teaching. Chris has encouraged me to listen far more intently to my playing and helped me to take my technical abilities to the next level. I recently passed my LTCL diploma with Chris's support, insight and constant good humour in abundance throughout my preparation. I cannot recommend Chris highly enough!
