About Amiel
Learn Chess from a Competitive Player
Hi! I’m a college student and a varsity chess player with a strong passion for the game and for helping others improve. As someone who actively competes in chess, I understand that becoming a stronger player takes more than simply memorizing openings—it requires strategic thinking, patience, discipline, and the ability to learn from every position.
As your tutor, I aim to make chess lessons both professional and enjoyable. I adapt my teaching to your current skill level, whether you are a complete beginner learning the basics or an intermediate player looking to improve your tactics, strategy, openings, and overall decision-making.
My lessons focus on understanding the ideas behind each move rather than simply telling you what to play. We can analyze games, solve tactical positions, practice opening principles, and work through real-game situations to develop your confidence and chess intuition.
Being a varsity player has taught me the importance of preparation, consistency, concentration, and learning from mistakes—qualities I bring into every lesson. I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions, challenging ideas, and making mistakes as they develop.
Whether you're learning chess for the first time, preparing for school competitions, or simply looking to become a stronger and more confident player, I’ll help you build your skills one move at a time.

My Approach as a Tutor
I believe the best tutoring is not about simply giving students the answers—it is about helping them understand why something works and giving them the confidence to solve similar problems independently.
My teaching approach is student-centered, practical, and adaptable. I first identify the student’s current level, learning goals, and areas of difficulty, then adjust my explanations and pace accordingly. I use clear step-by-step explanations, real-world examples, guided practice, questions, and active recall to make lessons engaging and effective. I also encourage students to ask questions freely and make mistakes, because mistakes are often where the most meaningful learning happens.
A Typical Lesson
A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous material and a quick check of the student’s understanding. We then introduce the new topic by breaking it into manageable concepts and connecting it to what the student already knows.
After explaining the key ideas, I demonstrate examples and then work through exercises with the student. As their confidence grows, I gradually give them more independence while providing guidance whenever needed. We finish with a short recap, identify anything that still needs clarification, and set clear goals for the next lesson.
What Sets Me Apart
What I bring to tutoring is patience, adaptability, and a genuine focus on understanding rather than memorization. I don't expect every student to learn in exactly the same way. If one explanation doesn't work, I am happy to approach the concept from another angle until it makes sense.
I also aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable saying, “I don't understand this yet.” My goal is not only to help students improve their grades, but to develop their confidence, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn independently.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are suitable for students who want to strengthen their foundations, improve their chess performance, prepare for tournments, or gain a deeper understanding of challenging topics. I can adapt lessons to different levels and learning needs, whether a student needs additional support with fundamental concepts or wants more advanced practice and academic guidance.
Ultimately, I tailor each lesson to the individual student. My goal is simple: to make difficult subjects feel clearer, more manageable, and much less intimidating—while helping every student become a more confident learner.
