About Jeff
I've been a college English teacher for the past seventeen years. I teach techniques for literary analysis, essay writing, and creative writing. Before teaching at college, I taught English as a Second Language for nine years. I am from Montreal, so many of my students were second or third-language learners. I have a wealth of experience with both native and non-native speakers and writers. I have a passion for learning--both how to inspire my students to become better speakers and writers, and how to become a better teacher. I've trained in various innovative, evidence-based teaching and learning topics, including: writing in the disciplines, universal design for learning, active learning, and learning communities. I have a deep respect for the courage it takes anyone to leave their comfort zone and try to learn a new language. Besides teaching, I am a writer, storyteller, songwriter, and musician. All of these different pursuits inform my teaching methods, which involve a lot of playfulness and on-your-feet practice.

I can offer coaching in any of the following areas: English speaking, essay writing, creative writing, grammar, voice/tone/style in writing, rhetorical strategies for writing, literary analysis, and more. In short, if you want to improve your speaking or writing, I have a load of experience coaching students one-on-one. I'm especially adept at meeting you where you are--figuring out what your strengths are and how to build on those. For speaking, I'll highlight how you can make your personality come through more naturally. For writing, I emphasize the creative process--how to discover the best routine to tap into YOUR uniqueness as a writer and thinker. Lessons will involve play and practical activities to get you speaking and thinking on your feet. The lessons are for any age: from children to adults. Expect to leave each lesson with newfound confidence and a practical path to continue improving. Lessons are typically one hour, but can be shorter or longer depending on your preferences and needs.
