About Sangweon

Hey! My name is Sangweon, and I'm finishing my last year in Bachelor of Biomedical Science Scholars Program at Monash. This year, I've been selected to be the student ambassador for the Medicine faculty and a senior peer mentor.

In highschool, I completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program last year at Townsville Grammar School, along with holding various captaincies such as Boarding Captain and School Prefect.

I enjoy playing a variety of sports, from touch, soccer, and rugby (league and union) to long-distance running and weight training. I also love to cook crazy meals, especially Korean dishes! I'm also interested in playing piano (AMEB grade 6).

I know that I wasn't the smartest kid in high school, but I was able to achieve outstanding results by the end. I would like to join your academic journey based on all the lessons I've learned from high school. :)

I have completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and received the highest marks for Math AA in Townsville Grammar School. Lessons are designed for all primary and secondary students of any level to improve their Mathematical skills and knowledge. Best for IB Students!! (I know the IB structure inside out!) Overall, my aim is to create engaging and effective learning experiences that help students achieve their academic and personal goals.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    - I tutor in many subjects equally, but my passion is strongest in biology and in IB students. I studied the IBDP myself and learnt so many different strategies in learning. I took biology in grade 11/12 and fell in love.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    - I like to discuss any topics relating to my learning goals for the lesson and for the student as a whole. I set learning goals for lessons and I also set a goal for the student as an individual. For this, I like to discuss about their learning approach, how to study better, how to study more time-efficiently, exam prepping tips, how to deal with difficult topics, what to do when you get stuck etc. As listed above, my interests are in more realistic goals and learnings rather than formatted questions and answers.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    - My IB biology teacher in my high school was a great influence on me in falling love with learning and teaching. He was such a good teacher with best explanations and philosophy in learning. From experiencing his approaches in studying, I found myself loving to study more and more. Now I would like to share this experience with as many students as possible.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    - I think everything from the perspective of a student, just like I've been when I was in highschool and now, when I'm at the university. This makes it a lot easier to explain things and to build great rapport with the student and the students' parents. Also, I strongly believe that an hour or two of tutoring lessons per week isn't enough to change a student's academic experience. Hence I offer a 24 hour chat service where the student can call me or text me at any time to ask questions. Also for this, I plan my lessons to focus on the long-term goals in becoming a better student rather than simply memorize everything for a text coming soon.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    - As a part of my assignment in IB biology, I designed my own report on scratch. I came up with the topic, design, methods etc for the report. This report required me to grow multiple plants in different conditions. As a 17-year-old me, I had to come in multiple times a day for over 2 months to grow these plants. From this, I experienced, learnt and saw the fascinating nature of living things and found my passion there.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

    - I learned that the more I research and want to know about the fundamentals of human biology and cellular biology, the harder it becomes. It almost feels like it is simply impossible for humans to fully understand how every single body system works.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    - I am passionate about simply helping people. As common as this is said in our society I genuinely feel so. I love to spend my time planning my lesson and coming up with tailoring questions for my students. I like to see my struggle at first but fully understand it in 5 minutes. It feels very rewarding, especially students in grade 11/12, as they get closer to graduating and get more serious into studying, some text me at 1am in the morning about the role of golgi apparatus in a cell. It makes me feel so proud of them.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

    - I can confidently say that my teaching approach to students are from genuine care and love for the students. This makes every process in tutoring easier as it no longer feels like work or something that I have to to do. It simply becomes something that I want to do and like to do. I believe that the relationship between the tutor and the student is what is most important as this is the only way the student will be able to respect the teacher and to have the right attitude into learning.
