About Darren
I am passionate about social justice and believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to progress. My enthusiasm for teaching started when I began to see education as a tool to social inclusion. I became qualified as a teacher during the 5 years I was based in Newcastle working for a national youth charity - mainly supporting young people in crises. This was a great job! It was very hard but very rewarding and there was never a dull day. I later joined a renowned New Deal organisation and taught maths and English to students of all ages from 18 to 70. More recently I worked for the newly initialised DWP Work Programme. It was very exciting being part of a brand new scheme from day one and I really enjoyed the challenge and success of supporting people who wanted to get their lives back on track. I’ve been a full-time freelance tutor for over 6 years now and enjoy the freedom of tailoring individual teaching sessions that really do reflect the needs of individual students. Half of my students tend to be Year 8-11 school students or home-schooled between ages 9 to 16. The other half is made up of adults (either learning English as a foreign language or undertaking professional testing prior to studying to become teachers or nurses) and college students.

So here we are... heading out of lockdown and towards a bit more normality :) Time to get back on track... hit the gym.. catch up with friends, catch up with loved ones... and, of course, take back control of our self-progression... oh the excitement! I know it's difficult for people across all stages of education to have so many holes in their learning (and perhaps a little lost confidence too), so let's get on with it :) The new school term is only a few months away and for those of you moving into Y10 to start your final GCSE education with gaps in your Y9 skills - now's the time to get ahead. If you're heading into your final year in September or into college worried about not having a secure foundation for your new learning - let's get rid of those worries. And of course, for all you adults out there looking to start a new career or progress the one you're in ... it's time to get back to preparing for those professional tests. My face to face lessons are highly interactive and I make extensive use of IT based learning resources. My online lessons are via Zoom. ... and a little about me ... I’m passionate about teaching and it’s this passion along with my belief in people’s potential that drives my success in teaching. My students enjoy learning programmes centred around their own specific needs and progress quickly through my flexible ‘student first’ approach. My lessons are highly interactive and I make extensive use of multimedia. I also create most of my own teaching resources based on individual students' needs and interests. My teaching qualifications include City and Guilds Teaching English Language and NCG Mathematics Specialist Certificate in Education (both through Leeds Metropolitan University) and professional Certificate in Education through the University of Greenwich, London. Whilst working for a major provider in Sunderland, my group lessons were assessed as Outstanding by OFSTED. I hold an up to date DBS Certificate and am registered as self-employed with HMRC.

Thank you for believing in me and pushing me to help me with my GCSEs. Thank you for not giving up on me when there was no one else wanting to help me.
Thank you so much for being there for Jordan when so many others had given up on him. Thank you for guiding and inspiring my boy who has always known negativity, trauma and bullying. You have given Jordan a hunger to learn and better himself and aim high for his GCSE's. I am eternally grateful!
Darren is an excellent tutor. My daughter's Asperger's always made school very difficult for her and her confidence plummeted over the last year or so. Darren was excellent in the way he engaged with her and he quickly rekindled her interest in learning. Her confidence has improved dramatically and I am very grateful to Darren for his patience and skills in offering my daughter lessons and homework that inspired her so much. I would highly recommend him.
My granddaughter who has Aspergers and dyslexia was struggling in the run up to her GCSE English exam. We were incredibly fortunate to find Darren who proved to be ideal with just the right balance to suit teaching her special needs. I was particularly impressed by all the extras he left her to practice with. The proof of his excellent tuition is that she achieved a B having been predicted a D after only a few short weeks teaching. Anyone looking for a tutor should look no further. Darren is superb.
Darren has been a great success. My teenage son was not enthusiastic about being tutored although he knew it was a good idea. Since meeting Darren he takes pride in the work they do together. Darren always gives my son a very full tutor session supported by feedback and homework tasks. Darren has developed sessions tailored specifically to my sons needs. So far I am very pleased and feel I am receiving very good value for money from someone who is genuinely interested in helping my son progress and improve.
