About Chloë
Dr. Chloë Sobek is an award-winning composer-performer, improviser and educator based between Naarm/Melbourne and Berlin, with over 20 years of professional experience in music. She holds a PhD in Music Performance and Composition from Monash University and works across contemporary composition, improvisation, electroacoustic music, experimental performance and creative music research.
Chloë’s practice is centered on the violone — a Renaissance precursor to the double bass — which she combines with electronics, field recordings, extended techniques, improvisation and collage-based approaches to sound. Her work spans concert music, noise, electroacoustic practice, musique concrète, experimental improvisation and research-led performance, treating sound as both a material object and a site for artistic inquiry.
Career highlights include being commissioned and curated by David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet, collaborating with Garth Knox of the Arditti Quartet, recording for Relative Pitch Records in New York, and presenting her research at major international conferences including NIME and TENOR. Her debut album Apotropaic was released to critical acclaim, followed by Burning Up with acclaimed saxophonist Tim Berne.
Chloë has received a number of major awards and grants, including the Allan Zavod Performers’ Award, the Monash Jazz and Improvisation Postgraduate Award, the Marten Bequest Scholarship and the RMIT Vice-Chancellor’s Award. She has also received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Australia, the City of Melbourne and the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, and was a double bass scholarship student at the Australian National Academy of Music.
She has been described as “an artist that is thinking deeply about how to aestheticize what’s on everyone’s mind; to use art to drive engagement with ideas whilst pushing the boundaries of technique and technicality.” — Kieran Ruffles, 4ZZZ

I offer individual online lessons in composition, experimental instrumental practice, improvisation and creative musicianship. My teaching is designed for students seeking a rigorous yet highly personalized learning environment; one that supports technical development, artistic clarity and the cultivation of an individual voice.
As a composer, performer and academic, I work with each student in a way that responds to their specific goals, abilities, interests and artistic direction. Lessons are tailored rather than standardized and may include work in technique, repertoire, improvisation, composition, critical listening and broader creative development.
I see teaching as a form of mentorship as much as instruction. Rather than offering a fixed method, I aim to create a structured but flexible framework in which each student can extend their practice, expand their musical thinking, refine their compositional and improvisational processes and develop confidence in their own creative direction.
Depending on the student, lessons may focus on:
- compositional development
- experimental and extended instrumental practice
- improvisation
- repertoire and interpretive work
- listening practices and critical reflection
- building a sustainable independent practice
Lessons are suited to students, emerging artists and dedicated practitioners who want thoughtful, high-level guidance in contemporary, experimental and creative music practice. They may be particularly useful for those seeking one-to-one support in developing their artistic voice, creative ideas, compositional practice or experimental approach to performance.
