About Dr Nikita
I'm an electrical engineer by training; an academic, researcher and mentor by experience !
For several years I enjoyed lecturing (around 1000+ students) and supervising students in India and at Cambridge University (50+ students). Now, I also have roles supervising and mentoring Ph.D. students at University of Oxford and in universities in India. While I enjoy the classroom teaching of tutorials and group discussions of supervisions, I would also welcome the opportunity for closer interactions and intellectual dialogue with students through dissertation supervision and industrial project work.

My undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. degree come under the umbrella of Electrical & Electronics Engineering. I have enjoyed teaching right from my school to my college days and my teaching philosophy is to ‘engage, educate and innovate’ with students.
My first degree is in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and my master’s degree is in Power Electronics and Drives Engineering. I am capable of teaching any of the fundamental first- and second-year courses along with the core modules from the third- and fourth-year courses, specifically Energy Systems, Semiconductor Physics and Digital/Analogue Electronics.
I started my career in lecturing during my master’s (2010) degree. I worked as a full-time lecturer at the prestigious National Institute of Technology, India for a year from 2011-12. My responsibilities included lecturing for 30 final year engineering students, framing the syllabus, notes, including setting assessment materials, marking and invigilation, and grading students. Additionally, I was in charge of the Electrical lab and Machines lab for around 120 electrical and 200 mechanical engineering undergraduate students of second and final year respectively.
As an active member of the supervision community at the University of Cambridge Churchill College and the Department of Engineering for 4 years (2013-17), I have been involved in many aspects of teaching: supervisions, demonstrations and assessment. I have supervised/tutored Electrical Engineering Tripos IA and IB papers – Physical Principles of Electronics and Electromagnetics, Analysis of Circuits and Devices, Digital Circuits and Information Processing, Analysis of Circuits and Devices, Electrical Power and Electromagnetic Fields and Waves and Electrical Engineering for three years. In this time frame, I have supervised around 40+ first year engineering undergraduates in groups of 2 – 32+ students at Churchill College and 10+ students at Trinity Hall. In the process, I have learned to tailor my supervisions to suit the individuals, based on their abilities as well as their own academic interests. With my lecturing background, I take time to ensure that students have a good grasp of the course content as well as the ability to successfully perform in an examination situation.
Additionally, I have been a demonstrator for the Integrated Electrical Project (IEP) lab and CD player project lab for a year. This environment has offered me the opportunity to understand the differences between their theoretical understanding versus practical outlook and interest. This is critical in the undergraduate programme at the University of Cambridge as it is a broad-spectrum syllabus covering fundamental principles in electrical and electronics, evenly balanced with practical and theoretical subjects. Parallelly, this has allowed me to grow as an academic who can invoke interest in students by relating theory to practical applications.
I have also had the opportunity to be an interviewer for undergraduate admissions at Churchill College for two years interviewing around 30 candidates. I have been involved in reading applications and pre-interview assessments, conducting technical interviews with each applicant, and attending selection meetings. This unique exercise helped me better understand, learn and assess the qualities required for students to pursue engineering.
I’m invited to conduct summer courses, workshops and lectures in Engineering for school students in UK and India. I develop and mould the course content to connect it to the future of engineering. All this has given me a rich experience in teaching, curriculum setting and building a good rapport with students. I believe, it is important that as an educator, we need to be approachable at all times and for all aspects of the Electrical Engineering course; not just the modules being taught. Down the line, these qualities also helped turn me into a mentor for STEM aspirants and research students across the globe. This has contributed to improving my teaching methodologies so that it caters to a broad spectrum of students.
