About Fidan
Hello! I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share my passion for literature and education with you. As a dedicated scholar currently completing my PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Edinburgh, I specialize in exploring the intricate relationships between gender, culture, and literature, particularly within Turkish fiction. My dissertation, titled “Gendered Turkishness in Everyday Istanbul Through Elif Shafak’s and Orhan Pamuk’s Literature from an Aesthetic, Feminist, and Sociocultural Perspective,” reflects my commitment to understanding how literature can illuminate societal issues.
With a Master’s degree in Publishing from New York University and a Bachelor’s in Comparative Literature and French from UCLA, I bring a well-rounded academic background and practical experience in both literary analysis and content creation. My journey has allowed me to present my research at international conferences and publish articles that contribute to the discourse on gender and culture in literature.
As a tutor, I am passionate about fostering a love for reading and writing in my students. I believe that literature is a powerful tool for critical thinking and personal growth. My teaching approach is interactive and student-centered, encouraging open dialogue and exploration of complex themes. I strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to express their ideas.
Whether you’re a high school student preparing for advanced literature courses, an undergraduate seeking to enhance your analytical skills, or a graduate student looking for guidance on research and writing, I am here to help you succeed. Together, we can navigate the rich landscapes of literature, develop your writing prowess, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the stories that shape our world.
Let’s embark on this literary journey together—your exploration of literature awaits!

As a tutor, my primary goal is to empower students to develop their own critical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of literature. I believe that literature is not just a collection of texts but a lens through which we can explore complex cultural, social, and gender issues.
Here’s how I approach tutoring:
Teaching Method and Techniques
Socratic Method: I employ the Socratic method to encourage dialogue and critical questioning. By prompting students to articulate their thoughts and challenge assumptions, I help them engage more deeply with the material.
Interactive Discussions: I facilitate discussions that connect literary themes to contemporary sociocultural issues. This approach not only enhances comprehension but also makes literature relevant to students' lives.
Personalized Feedback: I provide tailored feedback on writing assignments, focusing on structure, argumentation, and style. My aim is to help students refine their writing skills while maintaining their unique voice.
Multimedia Resources: I incorporate various multimedia resources, such as film adaptations, interviews with authors, and scholarly articles, to enrich the learning experience and provide diverse perspectives.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Introduction (10 minutes): Brief overview of the lesson's objectives and key themes. For example, if we're discussing Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, I might introduce themes of redemption and cultural identity.
Textual Analysis (20 minutes): Guided reading of selected passages, focusing on literary devices, character development, and thematic elements. I encourage students to share their interpretations and insights.
Discussion (20 minutes): Open floor for students to discuss their thoughts on the text, drawing connections to broader sociocultural contexts. I facilitate this discussion, ensuring all voices are heard.
Writing Exercise (10 minutes): A short writing prompt related to the lesson, allowing students to practice articulating their thoughts in written form.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes): Recap of key takeaways and a preview of the next lesson. I also provide personalized feedback on any assignments submitted prior to the session.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
My unique background in Comparative Literature, combined with my experience in publishing and teaching, allows me to bring a multifaceted perspective to tutoring. I have a strong emphasis on fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and exploring complex topics. Additionally, my research in gender and culture in Turkish literature provides a rich context for discussions, particularly for students interested in global perspectives.
Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for a diverse range of students, including:
Undergraduate Students: Those studying English, Comparative Literature, or related fields who seek to enhance their analytical and writing skills.
High School Students: Advanced learners preparing for AP Literature exams or seeking to deepen their understanding of literary analysis.
Graduate Students: Individuals pursuing advanced studies in literature, culture, or gender studies who need guidance on research and writing.
Whether you're looking to improve your writing, engage with complex literary texts, or explore cultural themes, my tutoring sessions are tailored to meet your specific needs and interests. Let’s embark on this literary journey together!
