About Alec
Hey everyone, My name is Alec. I have a B.A. in Music Education from Ithaca College and a M.A. in Educational Technology and Learning Design from SUNY Empire State. I have extensive ear training knowledge and can help you go from guessing at chord charts, tabs, and sheet music, to using intuitive ear training tactics and note reading skills to make sense of the songs you love.
If you want to build your ability to hear notes, chords, and melodies and instantly play them on your instrument, let's talk.
I love to surf in Long Beach NY and have lived there my whole life. I also work as an ocean lifeguard every summer and play bass and sing with my cover band.

Are you struggling to learn songs by ear?
Do you wish to listen to a song and quickly play it on your instrument?
I've been a music teacher for several years now, but the one thing I find to be most essential is learning ear training fundamentals. Without a basic understanding of how common pitch class systems work, playing an instrument is like trying to speak in a different language. I want to clear up any misunderstandings you might have about how music works, and show you a guaranteed way to steadily make progress and understand rhythms, intervals, scales, chords, chord progressions, and much more.

Before beginning lessons with Alec I tended to struggle with articulation and paying attention to where certain ones were. I would often look over them and just slur everything, but that has very much changed in the past two months! Alec took the time to split things apart in a fashion where I could focus on one thing at a time. He had me repeat sections and focus on single articulations to make sure they sounded fantastic. Among other things I struggled with before, articulating notes properly, sight reading, and having proper air support is now something I can safely say I have greatly improved on since starting lessons!
Alec is the best teacher I’ve ever had and his love of music is contagious
I started lessons with Alec to help prepare me for NYSSMA. Alec helped me so much. I played a level 5 this year, and it started out slow for me, but after 3 lessons with Alec, I noticed my progress growing faster and faster. He gave me helpful exercises to practice tricky passages in the music, and insisted we practice my scales weekly. I originally signed up for help with NYSSMA, but I will definitely be continuing lessons with him this summer. He said we could work on other music that might interest me more than classical clarinet music. He said learning jazz is fun and makes me a valuable player. I’m excited. Take lessons with him!
Alec has given me private music lessons in the past. He has a patient and welcoming demeanor which encourages you to improve your abilities without fear of criticism. Alec will motivate you to keep practicing and to grow as a musician whether you are a beginner or more advanced.
Alec is an excellent teacher. With his many years of experience playing clarinet, his ability to teach at any level his second to none. Highly recommend him to anyone from novice to someone honing their craft. Will absolutely continue working with him!
The best clarinet teacher in long beach!
