About Ellie
I worked at Kumon for a year as an Early Learning Tutor. I loved my job, and my ability to connect with my students and see their progress has been truly inspiring. I could not continue working at Kumon since it was an hour's commute and I could only work on school nights. I hope to launch back into tutoring and continue to work with students. Reading and writing have always been a staple in my life, and I participate in my school's debate team and am heavily involved in my school's music and theater program. I am the president of my school's National Honor Society chapter and am a part of my school's student body government. I also participated in Poetry Out Loud and was the second runner-up in Delaware's State Finals. I am planning to go to college for Elementary and Secondary Education with a minor in child psychology. I work in my church's children's program and run a class during the service.

A typical lesson will include reading comprehension, spelling, and English grammar. For reading comprehension, I assign books based on the student's interests and skill level along with many classics such as: "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Tales of Peter Rabbit," and "Charlotte's Web" for children in grades 2-4, and "The Secret Garden," "The Hobbit," and "Little Woman," for students grades 5-8. These are only a few of the many classics that I hope to introduce to my students. I write worksheets for each chapter that include vocabulary memorization (no more than 5), questions (no more than 3), and a fun activity. At the beginning of the lesson, we will go over the answers to the worksheet and then discuss the book and read important/favorite parts. At the end of a book, we will do a project together about the book.
For the spelling section, we will learn 10 spelling words per lesson, along with learning phonograms and spelling rules. I will use the "Spell to Write and Read" by Wanda Senseri. There will rarely be any homework for spelling besides memorizing the spelling words since there will be an assessment every lesson on the previous lesson's words.
For Grammar, we will use the Shurley English curriculum for grades 1 - 8. You may be required to buy a student textbook so that your child can read through the book himself and have the material on hand if help is needed for homework. Worksheets will be provided, but you may buy a workbook too. If so, assignments will be given during class.
My lessons will be centered mainly around the student's developmental progress. I will use a standard curriculum in the beginning unless your child finds it difficult to understand or keep up. Then, based on my observation of the student's performance and activities, I will comprise lessons myself based on their learning capacity. A typical lesson is usually thirty minutes for each subject. The student will have homework and memorization assignments to do outside of sessions. During the lesson, we will go over the assignments, and then learn new skills and materials. If the student has any issues with their homework from school, I will be happy to go over it with them and help them through the problems. I am a big proponent of hands-on learning and oftentimes push my students to learn how to think for themselves through logic and intrinsic thinking. I seek to learn about and understand my students beyond just their learning capabilities. I believe that children are more open to learning with someone they can trust and relate to, and I hope to maintain trust and goodwill with my students. I also ask for (at minimum) monthly student checkups with parents to discuss any issues, evaluations, or observations of the student. These checkups are to ensure that parents are involved and a significant part of their child's development.
