About Jennifer

Hello! My name is Jennifer Clifton, and I am absolutely thrilled to be your teacher this year! This marks my 19th year in education, and I can truly say that I love my job just as much today as I did on day one. Holding degrees in both Elementary Education and Special Education, my passion is creating an inclusive, supportive, and engaging classroom where every single child can thrive and discover the joy of learning. On a personal note, I am proudly from Fort Payne, Alabama (Roll Tide!). Outside of the classroom, my life is wonderfully busy. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 25 years, and together we have four amazing children. When I am not teaching or keeping up with my big family, you can usually find me cozying up to watch a scary movie or working on my latest fleece knot blanket project.I am looking forward to a fantastic school year filled with growth, learning, and fun! Fun Facts At-a-GlanceTeacher: Jennifer Clifton ️Experience: 19 years in Special Ed & Elementary Education Roots: Fort Payne, Alabama Sports Team: Alabama Crimson Tide Family: Married 25 years with 4 kids 🤍Hobbies: Making cozy knot blankets & watching horror movies If you need any other classroom materials to match, I can help you draft a welcome letter to parents, design a classroom rules flyer, or map out a first-week lesson plan. Master Reading Lesson Plan TemplateThis structured template follows a research-backed framework for explicit reading instruction.1. Phonemic Awareness Warm-Up (5 Minutes)Goal: Train the ear to hear, isolate, and manipulate sounds without text.Activity: Sound Counting. Say a word aloud (e.g., ship). Have the student clap, tap, or count the individual sounds on their fingers (/sh/ /i/ /p/ = 3 sounds).2. Phonics & Word Study (15 Minutes)Goal: Teach the connection between letters (graphemes) and sounds (phonemes).Activity: Explicit Introduction. Introduce one target sound pattern for the day (e.g., the "-ch" digraph).Blending: Write 5 to 10 words using that pattern on a whiteboard (e.g., chin, chop, rich, much). Have the student point to each sound, say it, and then blend the full word smoothly.3. Guided Text Reading & Fluency (15 Minutes)Goal: Apply the phonics focus to connected sentences and build a smooth reading pace.Activity: Decodable Passage. Select a short story heavily featuring the target sound (e.g., a story about a character named "Chip" who went to the "beach").Strategy: Use Choral Reading (reading aloud together at the same time) or Echo Reading (you read a sentence expressively, and the student repeats it immediately) to model strong fluency.4. Vocabulary & Comprehension (10 Minutes)Goal: Ensure the student understands the meaning behind the decoded words.Activity: Retelling and Questioning. Close the text and ask a mix of literal and inferential questions:"Who was the main character?""Why did Chip go to the beach?""What do you think Chip will do next?"
