About Shelani
I am a professional Drama teacher, actor, and performing artist. I am passionate about delivering engaging lessons that stimulate creativity and are rooted in experience-based learning. My teaching philosophy is threefold, integrating: thinking, feeling and willing. I cater to each individual student, and aim to prepare exceptional and rich content. In my tutorials I have seen dramatic changes and results in my students, usually in a short period of time. The students who stick with me for a longer period of time, I see major growth in their potential, in their confidence and I see them become professional actors. I have more than ten years experience in teaching drama; with a highlight of being the head of the Drama Teaching department at Stellenbosch Waldorf School where I directed Shakespeare and modern plays with the high school and taught ages 14 to 18 all about theatre history and practical theatre techniques. I studied performing arts, speech and drama teaching and musical theatre at the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town for 4 years. I graduated with my Trinity Licentiate Diploma in Speech and Drama teaching, (which is equivalent to a degree) and various other qualifications performing and dancing qualifications you can have a look at on my cv. One of the main methods that I work with is inspired by the Waldorf education pedagogy. It is 3 fold. This 3 fold method includes: thinking, feeling and willing, Each class will have 3 aspects. There will be an aspect for inquiry, encouraging questions and being able to investigate and solve problems. There is an aspect of feeling: Encouragement and motivation from me, and also for the student to grasp the work and feel like they understand the concepts. Then there is willing: An aspect of engaging the will to do, in games or kinesthetic experiences. (hands on experience.) My classes are student centered and include the use of reflection as a part of the learning process. Most importantly, I work with each student individually and cater my lessons to each one's needs, age and goals. In general a lesson will consist of the following: A practical warm-up for the voice and body (Something that centers and grounds the student) This is followed by a creative activity that will either be using the imagination, (visualization), breathing exercise (to work on breathing techniques) or relaxation (to calm the nervous system), or an improvisation exercise that engages the creativity. Then we will do 1 or 2 activities that introduce the topic of the day with a 2nd or 3rd activity that would be the main part of the class. This also includes a practical aspect and the student creating and using their own imagination. For example working on a story, or using three elements of physicality to show and role play a typical scene or scenario from their lives. The class ends with a cool down exercise. The exercise can relax the student and center them at the end of the class, or it can be a high energy exercise so that the student leaves feeling energized. Shelani took both my children for drama lessons and could get them to respond and get through their own difficulties as I have never experienced. My daughter in particular is a sensitive individual and she blossomed under Shelani’s care. Shelani has an uncanny ability to read “her” children well and both of mine were teenagers at the time, so I have great respect for her and would recommend her to anyone for lessons. She is also great fun and strict - not easy to balance, but she does.

Book your first lesson absolutely free! There is a travel fee of R100 for each trip (this includes the first lesson. The hourly rate will be free, but if I travel, the travel cost will apply) A discount of R40 for Webcam lessons. (When you buy a package for webcam classes there is no additional discount, the package prices are fixed.) Buy a 5h package for R1350 or Buy a 10h package for R2400 and save R450! My cancellation policy is that 50% still needs to be paid if the lesson is cancelled within 24 hours.
