About Anna
A graduate of English from the University of London, I completed my Master’s in Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Kent in 1994. I worked briefly and quietly for the library service, but two years later, broke free of those dusty corridors to work with books more creatively and analytically, as copy-editor and production editor, then managing editor, for a publishing services company in Kent specialising in educational and academic books. After ten years, I went freelance, continuing my editorial work for a variety of clients, broadening my subject areas and formats to include online publications. Following a serious pep talk from my husband (aka being shoved in front of a student on a computer screen with nothing but a handful of learning materials to hide her consternation), over the last seven years, I have also been teaching English as a second language alongside my editing. I have now taught thousands of hours of lessons of English, focusing on accent, literature, writing and conversation. A keen student myself, I have accumulated a cluster of slightly superfluous A levels since leaving school. I am currently learning Spanish and astronomy. I have been vegan for 30 years and live with my vegan husband and vegetarian son, and exceedingly carnivorous cat, in Tunbridge Wells. I have been known to inflict my poetry and ‘creative’ writing on any innocent bystander within a range of three feet.

My online English lessons are usually an hour long and designed for adults whose first language is not English. Depending on your level and goals, we can focus on grammar, pronunciation, or explore English through literature and other interesting texts. We will use different resources, such as textbooks, presentations, articles and shared writing documents. I have a background in English literature, with a particular interest in Victorian novels and Shakespeare. Before becoming a tutor, I worked for many years as a copy-editor and proofreader — experience that has sharpened my eye for detail and language use. I’ve been tutoring English since 2018, and I really enjoy helping learners gain confidence and fluency.
