About Daniel

My GCSEs include grade A* in both English Language and English Literature, as well as a grade A in Mathematics.

My A-Levels include a grade A in English Literature alongside Classical Studies, History and an AS-Level in Philosophy.

I went on to achieve a First Class MA Honours degree in English Literature and then an MLitt with Distinction in Modern History. Both of these degrees were awarded by the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Also, I am a Trinity College London Cet. TESOL qualified Teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages, which is an internationally recognised teaching qualification.

As a classroom teacher of the English language, it has been essential for me to lead by example with clear communication in both speech and writing. I have taught students of widely differing levels of abilities and prior qualifications from basic skills for people with few or no formal qualifications through to postgraduate research students and experienced lawyers. In each case, I have been careful to gauge my register of language and seek feedback in order to make sure that I am communicating effectively without being condescending towards the students.

Also, I have needed to quickly establish positive working relationships with a wide variety of colleagues from many different social and cultural backgrounds. In particular, my English for Academic Purposes teaching has involved working on intensive courses, where many colleagues are both new to each other and new to the place of work, so it has been especially important to learn to help each other find our way around organisational structure and facilities. Similarly, in my previous temporary jobs at Derby College, I needed to quickly adapt to the English and then Humanities departments part-way through an academic year.

Most of my previous teaching has involved working as part of a small team of teachers, who have shared teaching responsibilities for the same classes of student. Regular, clear and concise communication that keeps all relevant colleagues in the loop has been essential in order to maintain continuity and consistency for the students. Judicious use of e-mail and VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) systems has been important in order to provide quick, concise and accessible written communication with colleagues without overburdening people with superfluous information.

I have always been responsible for my own lesson planning and preparation, which has often involved selecting and adapting different teaching materials to suit the circumstances. Time management has been particularly important during formal assessment periods, when close co-operation between colleagues is necessary in order to meet tight deadlines for assessment marking and moderating.

As a teacher of history, I have been given two opportunities to design and teach my own courses. My job as a Modern History Seminar Tutor at the University of Birmingham gave me the opportunity to design, deliver and assess my own undergraduate module for three semesters. This involved the design of an eleven week tutorial programme, supported by bibliographies, worksheets, student presentation guidelines and primary source excerpts for study, as well as a choice of essay questions for the final assessment, planning of tutorial worksheets. More recently, I was given a further opportunity to design and teach my own courses as an adult education History Tutor for the WEA. These courses were run as two-hour-long evening classes via Zoom video conference software and supported by course materials that I organised and uploaded to the Canvas VLE.

Most of my teaching work has involved writing confidential student reports and adding personal assessment data to secure electronic databases including the ProMonitor system used at Derby College. Also, I have received training in Safeguarding and Prevent in Further Education through the WEA (Workers' Educational Association), so I appreciate the importance of confidentiality and discretion in staying alert to student welfare and reporting any concerns quickly and discreetly.

My voluntary work with Derbyshire County Council Adult Education included tutoring students with sometimes very serious personal and social problems. Therefore, it was particularly important to be tactful and discreet about the personal circumstances of different students. The Adult Literacy class provided some particularly valuable experiences with adult students, who had previously had such bad experiences of school that they had developed a debilitating fear of formal education, as well as a sense of shame and self-doubt, because of their poor levels of literacy.

Small group work and one-to-one tuition has come to form an increasingly large part of my most recent EAP teaching experience. Most of this work has involved supervising students' individual research projects. However, there have also been regular progress reviews and referrals for additional support. All one-to-one tutorials have been logged in personal files with clear action plans for the students to work on. There has also been an element of pastoral care in order to make sure that students get specialist help with practical matters like housing.

The serious delay in the submission of my doctoral thesis is closely connected to the significant changes in higher education and academic research funding in recent years. These changes have been summarised in the article ‘The Disposable Academic’ published in The Economist (16th Dec. 2010). The particular difficulties for British doctoral students researching continental European history are summarised by Prof. Sir Richard J. Evans in the last chapter of Cosmopolitan Islanders: British Historians and the European Continent (Cambridge, 2009).

The high quality of my research has nonetheless received some formal recognition from the IHR (Institute of Historical Research) at the University of London, which awarded me the 2014 Sir John Neale Essay Prize in Tudor History. I am currently planning to apply for re-admission to Birmingham in order to submit my completed thesis. In the meantime, I have presented research papers at academic conferences in Oxford (July 2014 and March 2016), Birmingham (March 2015) and London (Levantine Heritage Foundation, November 2016). Also, I am an academic book reviewer for Rosetta (University of Birmingham) and the Revue des Études Sud-Est Européennes (The Romanian Academy, Bucharest). I have also served as a peer reviewer for The International History Review (Routledge).

My personal interests include music, art, literature, history and the German language. I have previously written many reviews and interviews on music, art and theatre for various student newspapers and regional magazines. More recently, some of my letters on historical, political and cultural topics have been published in The Times (6th Feb. 2010), The Daily Telegraph (4th Aug. 2010, 8th May 2015), The Times Literary Supplement (9th Oct. 2009), History Today (Feb. 2010, June 2010, May 2013, June 2020), Standpoint (May 2015) and The Critic (Mar. 2022). I enjoy playing, composing and arranging music for the electric bass guitar. I also enjoy swimming and cross-country walking. I have previously completed public footpath surveys for Derbyshire County Council.
