About George
I'm an enthusiastic and friendly Oxford graduate who has just completed a Master`s at Royal Holloway. I now work at King's College London as Chaplaincy Assistant. When I lived in Surrey, I taught a handful of students aged 6 to 17 in beginner piano, GCSE English, and IB and A level Music. I have also taught baritone horn to an adult beginner. I teach English and Writing Skills at Oxford Royale Academy Summer School.
My academic work focuses on contemporary music for theatre, and has consequently always taken a literary approach. My studies have given me a very thorough knowledge of music theory and analysis, but it has been hard-won! When I sat grade 5 theory as a teenager, I really struggled with it, and it was only with the help of a patient and thorough tutor that I gathered the confidence to not only sit the exam but take my study of music to the next level and beyond.
I'm keen to give my students the opportunities that I've been lucky enough to gain, whatever their ability and relationship with their subject. Confidence can transform a person's ability to both grasp and articulate knowledge, whatever stage in life or education they might be at. The reason I enjoy tutoring so much is that it affords a student the space to develop that crucial confidence; outside of the hierarchy of the classroom, they can set their own pace and learn in a way that suits them.

I am very happy to respond to the request to write a reference for George HAGGETT in connection with his application for tutoring at your institution. I have been George’s academic tutor since October 2015, receiving termly reports from all his tutors which are discussed with him, along with general development, at regular intervals during the year.
George ranks as one of the most talented students in his year, producing superlative written work on a regular basis. This was manifested in his first-year examinations where he was awarded a distinction and scored very highly in the Analysis, Issues, Music History and Extended Essay. While his interests are gravitating more towards the 20th century, it is important to note his critical engagement with a wide range of historical materials from the intricacies of medieval music onwards. Following on from his first year there is no sense whatsoever of plateauing; indeed, he is broadening and deepening his interests, not least in critical theory, analysis, and opera. It is with great pride that he achieved First Class Honours in his Finals Examinations this summer.
George is also indefatigable in his extracurricular ambitions and has successfully revived the Music Society at College, notably broadening its scope into an ‘Arts Society’. This shows his dedication, his sociability, and his ability to complete projects to the benefit of many.
It is rare to meet students with academic excellence and all-round people skills. George fits this description and has greatly enjoyed teaching this summer following graduation. I can recommend him to you unreservedly. He would be a great asset to your institution.View more recommendations
