I rely on communication and patience to know that my students aren't just memorizing answers, but truly understand the subject. Let's begin where you feel most stuck! I primarily teach grades 6-12, which is typically the ages where learning feels challenging. As many of my students have the added pressure of learning disabilities or falling somewhere on the autism spectrum, I know how taunting even smaller assignments can feel, let alone quizzes and tests.
I find the best way to get to that "ah ha!" moment is finding a way to tie the information to something that the students know. Sometimes that looks like comic book stories and movies, whereas other times it's playing baseball. No matter the subject, there is a way to understand what the text is trying to say.
Over the last few years, I have seen firsthand that traditional communication, reading, and comprehension skills have changed. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to recognize that and correct course. Let's work together towards developing those skills that help us find success!
