About Lydia
Since retiring from teaching English in the summer of 2025 I have been tutoring online for a year.
I specialise in AQA, Edexcel (GCSE) and OCR (A level) and have been an examiner for AQA and OCR.
My specialist texts for GCSE are: 'Macbeth', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'A Christmas Carol', 'An Inspector Calls' and 'Of Mice and Men'.
At A level, my specialisms are: 'Hamlet', 'A Doll's House' and 'Paradise Lost'. After teaching for over thirty years, I have experience teaching a wide variety of other texts.
Alongside classroom teaching, I have spent decades tutoring students of all abilities, from those with dyslexia and neurodiverse profiles to high-achieving students aiming for top grades and competitive university places.

To enable progress, I help students to develop knowledge, master effective techniques and manage time skills. Students become more confident when they understand exactly what examiners are looking for and can develop practical strategies they apply independently.
My lessons usually follow a clear structure: I introduce a challenging task, model expert responses, provide guided practice before using detailed feedback to consolidate learning, giving students a genuine sense of control over their progress. In addition, one-to-one tuition allows me to identify precisely where a student's understanding or exam technique is breaking down, so that each lesson can address any obstacles preventing progress.
I have created thousands of resources over the years, giving students immediate access to carefully structured notes, model responses and targeted practice tasks to boost their attainment.

Lydia has worked with both my children over the years. They are very different but both enjoyed working with her and found her sessions massively useful. She recently helped with GCSE exam preparation, identifying and working on performance gaps. This really helped with exam day confidence and happily paid off in results too!
Lydia Tutored my daughter for GCSE
She made a real difference to her confidence in English Language & Literature , and introduced a love for the subject .
Through an organised no nonsense approach they vastly improved her final GCSE result by 2 grades
We are very grateful to Lydia for guiding our daughter through her GCSE English language and Literature over the last year.
We found her to be methodical and her resources well put together, with strong developmental feedback given. My daughter found the way Lydia explored themes, techniques and characters really helpful. Together they created detailed revision flashcards, model essay answers and Lydia‘s passion for literature was definitely contagious! Lydia gave good predictions for the Literature paper questions and lots of scaffolding to improve essay writing.
Our daughter is dyslexic and her school did not have an appropriate teacher for the first term of year 11. Lydia was able to complete any missing input and keep us on track.
She is highly emotionally intelligent, coaching as well as teaching our daughter, who felt very confident going into the exams.Mrs Livingston was my teacher for my Alevels from 2023-2025. She provided in depth discussion points and encouraged both an analytical and enjoyable instruction on the texts we studied. With her teaching, I was able to achieve an A* in my English Literature Alevel under the OCR exam board.
