About Phillip
I am a licensed teacher in North Carolina with a degree in Elementary Education and over 15 years of classroom experience teaching 5th and 6th grade math. Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide range of learners, helping students build strong foundational skills and develop lasting confidence in mathematics.
My approach to tutoring is structured, patient, and highly individualized. I focus on meeting each student exactly where they are, identifying learning gaps, and rebuilding understanding step by step. I believe students succeed in math when they are given clear instruction, consistent practice, and the support they need to think through problems independently.
I specialize in math instruction for students in kindergarten through 7th grade, including elementary math foundations, middle school math skills, and pre-algebra readiness. Whether a student needs help catching up, strengthening core skills, or being challenged beyond grade level, I tailor each lesson to their specific needs and learning style.
Parents and students can expect professionalism, reliability, and a calm, encouraging learning environment. My goal is not only to improve math performance, but also to help students develop confidence, reduce frustration, and see themselves as capable problem-solvers.

My tutoring approach is built around clarity, confidence-building, and mastery of foundational skills in math for students in 7th grade and below. With over 15 years of classroom experience teaching 5th and 6th grade math and a degree in Elementary Education, I focus on helping students truly understand math rather than just memorize steps.
- Teaching method and techniques
I use a step-by-step, highly structured approach that meets students where they are. I begin by identifying gaps in understanding, then rebuild skills in a logical progression. I rely heavily on modeling, guided practice, and gradual release—showing students how to solve problems, working through examples together, and then supporting them as they try independently. I also incorporate real-world examples and visual strategies to make abstract concepts more concrete.
I prioritize questioning techniques that help students think through problems instead of just giving answers. My goal is to help them become independent problem-solvers who can explain their reasoning.
- Typical lesson plan
A typical session includes:
*Quick warm-up review* of previously learned skills to build retention
*Focused teaching segment* on one specific skill or concept (such as fractions, decimals, ratios, or pre-algebra basics)
*Guided practice* where we work through problems together step by step
*Independent practice* to build confidence and accuracy
*Closing review* to check understanding and address any remaining confusion
If needed, I also assign short follow-up practice to reinforce learning between sessions.
- What sets me apart as a tutor
What makes my approach different is my classroom-tested ability to simplify complex concepts and my patience in helping students rebuild confidence. I understand how students think at the elementary and middle school level, and I know how to identify exactly where misunderstandings begin. I don’t rush the process—I focus on mastery, not memorization.
I also bring a supportive, encouraging teaching style that helps reduce math anxiety and builds a positive mindset toward learning.
- Who the lessons are for
My tutoring is designed for students in **grades K–7 math**, including:
* Elementary math foundations (K–5)
* 5th and 6th grade math mastery
* 7th grade math support (pre-algebra readiness, ratios, proportions, integers, basic equations)
* Students who need remediation, homework help, or enrichment
Whether a student is struggling to keep up or needs a stronger challenge, I tailor instruction to their individual needs and learning pace.
