About Dorothee

I have extensive experience teaching French across different age groups and levels. I have taught Key Stage 2 French in a primary school and currently tutor students of all ages from home, including primary, secondary, and adult learners. The majority of my students are preparing for GCSE, IGCSE, or A-level examinations. Additionally, I have experience teaching adult conversational French sessions at a language club in London.

I adapt my teaching methods to suit different learning styles, ensuring that lessons are engaging and effective for each student.

Nursery School (Foundation Stage)
Introducing children to a foreign language at an early age makes it easier for them to acquire and retain new linguistic skills. I create a fun and immersive learning environment using games, stories, songs, and miming to make learning enjoyable and natural.

Primary School (Key Stage 1 & 2)
French lessons for young learners are interactive and enjoyable, incorporating role play, songs, stories, and games. My approach focuses on the four key language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. By the end of their learning journey, pupils should be able to:

Use a wide range of vocabulary and simple sentences
Develop an awareness of French culture
Use correct pronunciation and intonation
Respond appropriately to spoken language
Apply basic grammar rules

Secondary School (Key Stage 3 & 4 – GCSE, IGCSE)
Lessons are designed to follow the curriculum guidelines, covering a variety of topics such as:

Lifestyle and health
Social issues and equality
Free time and the media
Advantages and disadvantages of new technology
Holidays
Home and environment
Work and education

I tailor lessons to meet students’ individual needs, focusing on:

Conversational skills
Listening and reading comprehension
Grammar (all tenses)
Expanding vocabulary
Translation and dictation
Role play and photo card descriptions

To build confidence and prepare students for exams, I use past papers, structured dialogues, assessments, and curriculum-based resources.

A-Level (AS & A2)
AS Level topics include:

Media (TV, advertising, new technology)
Culture (cinema, music, fashion, trends)
Healthy living and lifestyle (sports, holidays, well-being)
Family and relationships (friendships, family dynamics, marriage, partnerships)

A2 Level topics cover:

Environment: Pollution, energy, and protecting the planet
Multicultural society: Immigration, integration, and racism
Contemporary social issues: Wealth and poverty, law and order, impact of scientific and technological progress

Lessons also incorporate discussions on current French affairs, using newspaper articles and debates to enhance comprehension and conversational skills.

Adult Learners
I provide conversational French lessons for adults covering various topics, from travel to business. Learning objectives and plans are tailored to individual needs, ensuring a structured and effective approach. I have a wide range of resources, including textbooks and authentic materials.

Additional Information
I hold a valid DBS disclosure certificate and a French casier judiciaire national.

Current Students: My students come from diverse backgrounds, including comprehensive, grammar, and private schools. They are learning French for various reasons—exam preparation (GCSE, IGCSE, A-level), professional development, or personal interest. I also teach adult learners at all levels, from beginners to advanced.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak this language fluently because I am a French native speaker. I have been studying in France before moving to UK, I also studied in the University of London, Birkbeck College.

  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Asterix is a fictional French character who is the protagonist of the comic book series “Asterix”, created by writer René Goscinny and illustrator Albert Uderzo. It is filled with wordplay, puns, and clever linguistic humour.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love culinary traditions, such as baking, cheese making, and wine production. French meals are often seen as a social and cultural event, emphasizing the enjoyment of food and wine.

  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking French is the official language in many countries, including Belgium, Switzerland, Canada (Quebec) and several African nations such as Senegal, Ivory Coast… French culture and language have had a profound impact worldwide, especially in the fields of art, literature, fashion, and cuisine.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Grammar has its complexities, including verb conjugations, gendered nouns, agreement rules, and work order. Consistent practice, exposure to the language through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and maintaining motivation are key to overcoming the difficulties.

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I first moved to the UK, I was so nervous about buying something in a shop or in a cafe that I sometimes forgot the good manners of saying, “thank you or please”.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Immersing myself in the United Kingdom where the language is spoken gave me the opportunity to practice daily. Also, being surrounded by native speakers allowed me to engage in real-life conversations, listened to authentic language usage, and learned colloquial expressions.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have a high level of proficiency in the language I am teaching. I have a strong command of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural nuances. My language is my passion, and I am enthusiastic about motivating my students in the learning process. I obtained a French literacy degree from the University of London.
