About ANDREW
I started playing the piano from the age of six, following in the footsteps of my father, who was a jazz pianist and songwriter. I quickly moved on to studying classical music but my main interest was always jazz. I grew up listening to Nat King Cole, Art Tatum, and Oscar Peterson and was soon experimenting with my jazz trio. By the age of 18, I had taken on the role of musical director and accompanist for my sister, who was a professional vocalist. Together we appeared on numerous radio sessions for the BBC. At this time I was also writing arrangements for sessions with the BBC Radio Orchestra at the Maida Vale Studios in London and the Midland Radio Orchestra under the baton of Norrie Paramor. Since then, I have gone on to compose for and perform in a wide range of ventures from jazz and folk festivals, to theatrical productions and art installations. With nearly forty years of experience as a professional musician, I feel I have much to offer my pupils. I have been teaching the piano at the Bristol School of Performing Arts for ten years and in this time I have tutored pupils of widely differing ages and abilities, including adults and children as young as four. I pride myself on my ability to maintain good relationships with parents/guardians and pupils. Part of this stems from my flexible approach to teaching and learning. I appreciate the importance of tailoring lessons to the needs of each student; taking into account their aptitude, interests, and engagement with the subject.

I've played music and been taught by Andrew for years now and is one of the nicest people I know. He is also a great teacher, explaning things so they are easiiy understood and giving me the confidence and inspiring me to explore what I have learnt further. He is an extremely competent and knowledgeable musician and teacher.
Andy has been an excellent choice of tutor, converting my son from a drummer to a pianist. He has engaged with my teenager to try music in a variety of different styles which has increased his ability to read music and given him confidence to play for pleasure. All through Zoom!
I recorded a song with Andy for my acting CV; not being primarily a singer, I found him to be very patient and encouraging and was extremely happy with the result.
I would highly recommend Andy. He has taught my daughter for just over two years now and I have also recommended him to other friends who now have lessons with him. I can say this about Andy, an amazing Piano teacher, patient, thoughtful, trustworthy and so kind.
My daughter is already starting her grade 3 and couldn’t even play the piano. With Andy’s hard work and also my daughters she has succeeded to this level already.View more recommendations
