About Murielle

I am a qualified teacher with 30 years' experience of teaching French and Spanish, marking examination papers and conducting A level speaking tests in schools. I am also a native French speaker. I have qualifications as a translator. I took a break from teaching to bring my children up and became a private tutor. My experience as a teacher helps me set individual targets, give up to date advice and focus students on what they need to know to achieve their targets. Tutoring is an immensely rewarding job which allows me to help my students achieve and improve their predicted levels and grades but most importantly see their confidence in using the language and their enjoyment grow. I tutor all ages, GCSE & A level students but also Common entrance/Delf, adults wanting to learn the language from scratch or have conversation classes and undergraduates.

All my lessons are aimed at getting students to speak whilst reinforcing the other skills with the use of tailor-made material. I do not use textbooks but write my own material. I work on specific topic areas or grammar points. I am creative and, whenever appropriate, use games to teach, which helps my students memorise vocabulary and practise grammar in context. If language learning is fun, it becomes almost effortless. It does not take long for my students to feel comfortable and relaxed as I have a sense of humour and am very approachable. With exam classes, I revisit all the topics and grammar they need to know, which gives my students the confidence they often have lost. My experience as a GCSE and A level examiner is invaluable in giving advice to maximise exam success.

Find out more about Murielle

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native French speaker, born in Normandie where I spent my childhood.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

There are too many to choose from but I would choose Camus, the existentialist writer and philosopher but also Obelix and Asterix, the famous comic strip characters who are a fair representation of the passions and characteristics of French people, as they like eating, arguing but still get on with each other at the end of the day.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I like how the French like talking about all sorts of topics whenever the opportunity arises and also the tradition of eating together food which has been prepared with love and locally-grown food. Education and culture are also very important to the French.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Because it is a beautiful language and it is spoken in many other countries around the world. People who learn French derive a tremendous sense of achievement and also pleasure. Their daily experience of living in France or a French speaking country or just visiting it is transformed as they can communicate with everyone and make friends.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The difference between how words are written and how they are pronounced is baffling for some people. However, I have devised a system which works wonders. Conjugating verbs and tenses also takes time but students who are keen to learn don’t find it a problem.
  • Can you provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school?

I do remember the happy faces of the children I took to Boulogne for a day trip. These students had never been abroad, and could hardly afford this trip. It made a big impression on them and a lasting memory.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

As a French person who was learning English, I did an exchange with an English family when I was 15 and absolutely loved it. My English improved drastically and I loved the new culture. I went back to England after finishing university, graduating in English literature and am still here today.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have a vast experience of teaching and tutoring. After my PGCE in languages in LEEDS, I taught in schools, examined A level students, marked papers, gave courses for the army as well as in local primary schools. I teach people in the UK but also abroad. I started tutoring on-line in the aftermath of the confinement and never looked back. I have created and continue creating a wealth of documents to help my students learn and revise as well as power points with fun activities to manipulate the language. I adapt my resources and teaching to every student. I also have fantastic reviews for which I am very grateful, but at the end of the day, what motivates me most is seeing my students, whether young or not so young enjoy my lessons and learn a lot, as well as pass their exams and often get a better grade than had been predicted by their teacher.
