About Breven
I began tutoring while in the second grade of elementary school, supplemented a Chinese student's english learning a couple times a week in class. I began to get more involved in tutoring in high school, tutoring a middle school student in algaebra and geometry. Now, going into my Junior year at the University of Dayton as a Pre-Physical Therapy major, i have tutored CALCULUS and GENERAL CHEMISTRY and have recently been promoted to Supplemental Instructor for General Chemistry, hosting sessions twice a week for two college classes.
I love helping others break down their confusion in math and science and see a passion emerge for the subjects, just as I did when I FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO LEARN THE RIGHT WAY!!!
QUALIFICTIONS: Science major university Junior, 4+ years of tutoring experience, Supplemental Instructor for two general chemistry classes (the class that makes so many people give up on the idea of being a doctor when they simply didn't know the right tools and strategies for learning!)
(concealed information)
For my, teaching/tutoring began in the second grade, helping a Chinese exchange student learn english. I had such a great time doing that, and even becoming great friends with him, that I decided that turoring and helping other students learn was something I really wanted to do the rest of my life.
I am currently a Pre-Physical Therapy major at the University of Dayton. Go Flyers! In this major I have taken several college level chemistry courses, biology courses, and calculus, as well as the general eds.
I have 4+ years of tutoring experience, primarily in math and chemistry, and am now currently a Supplemental Instructor in the University of Dayton Chemistry department, supplying instructional sessions twice a week to two, 70 student classes in General Chemistry.

The first thing I always do with a new student is assess their immediate level of understanding. Dependent on the subject this may be done with a few practice problems or asking conceptual questions. As always, this evaluation will be pertaining to the subject matter the student wants to discuss and practice. Then, I will have prepared material, question, practice problem, etc., that I will incorporate into the lesson as I explain foundational concepts pertainent to the lesson.
At the end of the lesson, I find it crucial, from working with several students in the past, to give them practice problems to do entirely on their own (as much as possible). This forces the student to recall the information, properly storing it in their memory, and giving them confidence in seeing the tangibleness of what they've learned.
Elementary, middle school, high school, and college students.
In chemistry and math, in particular, doing well in a couple college classes isn't good enough. If your want your money and time to be worth it, you MUST hire a tutor with sufficient experience. This not only ensures the tutor likely knows what he/she is talking about, but it always gives the student a sense that this tutor probably has great communication skills, and can elequently explain confusing topics. That is what you will get when you hire me...a passionate, experienced, well-communicative, knowledgeable tutor!!!
Recently, I had an amazing experience tutoring a student. Last semester, during one of my Supplemental Instruction sessions for a General Chemistry class, a bunch of the students asked me about a concept they found confusing during the lecture. We worked through it as a whole group, really great communication was used, and they left the session feeling much better about the exam coming up in two days. During my next session, one day after the exam, one of the students told me the issue we resolved from last time came up a lot on the exam, and he ended up doing really well because of that clarification!
I felt so glad to know that I made a physcial difference in the career aspirations of a future physician.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before students talk to teachers and tutors about their needs, they should reflect on what it is they really struggle with in a given subject, and BE SPECIFIC about it! Most tutors will ask what you are struggling with most in a subject, but that is not specific enough. To lean effectively, specificity is needed. For instance, if a student wants help in solving derivatives in calculus, they should communicate that with the tutor, not just "I'm a bit confused with calculus." This will save both parties precious time and lead to a better learning experience.

I came in for tutoring at our school and Breven saw me, last minute, and helped in General Chemistry I and II, and even a few things in college Calculus! He was great at explaining the concepts stayed over a few extra minutes to make sure i understood everything. On my next exam in both chemistry and calculus, I ACED THEM!
I was struggling in 7th grade algebra and Breven cleared my confusion with great explanations, details, and patience! Thanks so much, Breven!!!
Breven helped me survive General Chemistry in college. Half way through the course, I thought I would have to drop it and give up on my dream of becoming a doctor, but with his help in his sessions and experience from doing well in chemistry helped me turn my grade around, and I ended up getting a B+.
Breven helped me learn English well! When I came to the USA, I knew very little English. Now, I feel very comfortable with it!
