About Jillian

I am a student, that may present itself more so as a weakness however I firmly believe that is a strength. I know better than most the process of learning how to use a new material. I am an art major, therefore when I enter a ceramics class or sculpture class, it is my job as a student to learn the new material and get as close as a I can to mastering it within a semester. Therefore I understand the process of learning. I know the building blocks and the steps to learning a material. And I can clearly communicate that to students, and we have some common ground as well. I would consider myself a teacher, but more importantly I will always considered myself a learner, I am a life long learner above all.

It has always been my passion, ever since I was a little girl. And my passion is of course something I want to share with the world. Everyone can make beautiful art. Everyone has the potential to be a great artist. Those who are good practice it, just as any other skill. We all start drawing the same way, stick figures during childhood but those who evolve are those who dedicate the time. When you give the time you get the results. And with that said you don't have to love drawing, Art is so diverse and offers so many different mediums everyone can find their own specific love. For me I love all art, but my passion is drawing. I like the simple stuff, but I am always eager to learn more. Art is something that gives me purpose, it's what I know and there's nothing I want more than to share this love I have for art with everyone.

When I was in high school my senior year I had the option to become a student intern, so I decided to try it and I worked in the fourth grade classroom and worked the after school art program as well and I loved it. And that love really began to grow and I continued on to take as many teaching opportunities as I could.

I am currently finishing up my sophomore year at Keuka College and I am studying to become an art teacher. I am an Art and Design Major with a Minor in Education, and I am looking to attend grad school for Art Education at Nazareth College in the fall of 2022. I have also done various internships teaching art. I've worked in a school setting with elementary students at Geneseo Central School, I've done art therapy at SUNY Geneseo College with the handicap adults, I've worked at ArtSmartStudios.LLC assisting teaching from ages 3-14, through the same nuisances I've also worked with adults doing private parties, and I've been apart of many volenteer programs working with school age children through camps and after school clubs etc. I have also done a some commission work for a few clients. And I am planning on become a tutor at Keuka in the fall for Art 101, a college studio art course.

I feel that first and foremost it's really important to get to know one another. Understanding their strengths, weakness, and how they learn, because this is something unique to each individual so it's crucial in understand how this student learns! And through this understanding you are forming a relationship with your students, which is important because it shows your students that you are invested in their personal success, which in turn inspires them to want to do the work no matter the assignment.

I have the most expirence with elementary and middle school aged students, however I've worked with a diverse group. I have worked with differently abled students of all age groups. And I have even worked with students in Thailand, where we had a language barrier. I also feel it is important to note these people I have been fortunate enough to work with have all come from different backgrounds culturally, economically, and geographically.

I would advise a student to ask how they teach. A bad teacher will not have an answer. A decent teacher will tell you how they teach. But a good teacher will instead ask you, the student how you learn best. A good teacher will be such an expert at their subject that they can teach it a hundred different ways, because it's not one size fits all in learning especially with art.

I've definitely had quite a few awe moments while teaching. However most recently I attended a volunteer trip to Thailand through the GiveProgram and I spent a lot of my time there working in the dormitory schools teaching the students English. I taught for a total of five days and the bonds I built with those children over that short course of time, have changed the way I approach teaching but more importantly the most profound effect has been the way I look at the world. Despite the clear laungage barrier, I learned that compassion speaks all languages. We spoke through smiles, hugs, and laughter with the accpection of a little bit of English. That of which being them communicating what they are for lunch, because we were teaching the food unit through flash cards. But most importantly we spoke with compassion through the simplist forms of human connect.. laughter and hugs and smiles. And that lesson is something I want to bring into my classroom and teaching career each and everyday. I vow to value the importance of compassion.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In terms of art I think the students should try and figure out what they want their end result to be and just to be able to describe it, so the teacher can see the students vision as well. It is then the teachers job to help the student acquire the skills needed to illustrate their vision. But even then a students vision can always change. And a student doesn't have to have a clear vision, a teacher should also be full of ideas that can help inspire the students vision if they face some creative block.
