About Lisa
It is my belief that anyone can draw and paint, if they have a good teacher! If you are new to drawing or painting with acrylics, I have the patience, creativity and teaching methods to help you improve quickly and gain confidence in the natural talent you were born with.
During my two years as an instructor for the franchise, "Painting With a Twist", I helped hundreds of students (young and old) to successfully create their own acrylic masterpieces within just a few hours!
I have had a life-long career as an artist, creating unique, original images for businesses and patrons throughout the State of Florida. I have experience using many different mediums, but my artistic strength is in graphite pencil, colored pencils, digital illustration and acrylics on canvas.
My accomplishments include (but are not limited to); participation as an artist in the 2017 Gasperilla Poster Art Contest, the Corey Avenue Fine Arts Festival, The Palm Harbor Fine Arts Show, and the Crystal Beach Arts Fest.
My illustration work has been published by Tolman Publishing(Little Mouse Press), Hibiscus Publishing, Sleepytown Press, Castlebridge Books, Stories for Children Magazine, and the SCBWI Bulletin Magazine. I currently have over a dozen children's Picture Books (that I illustrated) for sale on Amazon.com.
I have won numerous awards for my illustration work in the feild of children's publishing, and my illustration portfolio can be viewed at (concealed information) .
I've always felt that when you spend time doing something creative with another person, it boosts your own level of creativity far beyond expectations. It's like a jolt of energy or a spark that lights you up and suddenly you are capable of so much more!
That's what teaching does for me. When I share what I've learned, I'm passing the torch and in doing so, I become more...a new and improved version of myself.
I have a friend who is a creative writing teacher at our local college. Knowing that I was a published, professional illustrator, she asked me to come and speak to her students about how an illustrator/artist creates images from an author's manuscript.
The experience was one I will never forget! It was so fulfilling to be able to share my insights with the students, and witness how that knowledge effected their own work. Once they understood, it was like a light bulb had been switched on, and I could clearly see a change in their level of confidence!
I realized then and there that I had something very valuable to share, and that teaching was something I should be doing not only for others, but for the wonderful feeling it gave me.
As I mentioned in my opening statement, I have been a working artist all of my adult life. I have attended many classes in specific mediums, taken seminars and paid to attend conferences in the arts.
I worked as a painting instructor for several years at "Painting with a Twist", I taught drawing & painting classes at the CARES senior center, I an a former instructor for "Young Rembrants", I have mentored several other professional, working illustrators, and I have provided private art lessons for youngsters.

I like to meet with the student first, talk about their expectations and what they'd like to acheive. Taking time for a chat helps both parties to decide if we are a good "fit".
Once I understand their unique needs and requirements, I develope a lesson plan designed to achieve their goals. We work out a mutually comfortable schedule and lessons begin.
I have worked with children as young as five, and adults as old as 85!
I've taught in elementary schools, high schools (through art grants), and colleges.
I've conducted drawing classes, painting classes, writing classes, illustration workshops, on-line instruction, etc.
Before you begin your search for a teacher, decide what you are hoping to gain from the experience. Is it for fun, like a hobby -or- are you hoping to be able to sell your work as a result of your efforts?
If you are pursuing art as a hobby, you will (most likely) not be taking it as seriously as someone hoping to sell their work as a future artist. You will not be as likely to want to learn the technical side of painting, but rather, you will focus more on creative "play" and take pleasure in the "happy accidents".
Artist who wish to sell their work often prefer to learn thechnical terms and methods, and specific products that will help them to coax their work into a desired, specific look or style.
Tell your prospective teacher what your aspirations are, and this will help them to know exactly how to procede in planning your class/instruction.
I recently participated in "Hero's on Parade", the yearly fundraising event for Southeastern Guide Dogs. I was one of only a few local artists chosen to paint larger-than-life sized statues of golden retriever dogs that would stand as landmarks throughout Tampa Bay.
Each artist had a sponsoring business (mine was Wellcare, inc) and had to work with their sponsor on the design that best represented their philosophy.
Once the design was agreed upon, each artist painted their own statue, which would be voted on by the general public in an on-line forum. Each vote was $1, with all proceeds going to Southeastern Guide Dogs for the care and training of pups who are freely given to visually impaired individuals from all walks of life.
The people who receive a dog from this charity are forever changed. It's as if life itself has been restored! The freedom to come and go, and live life to the fullest through the assistance of these incredible hero's is invaluable.
I am proud to say that the staue I painted held third place throughout most of the competition, ultimately placing in the top ten! The unveiling ceremony was a blast!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Q: How long is your attention span, 30 minutes? -an hour? two hours?
The answer to this question is the amount of time you should devote to each class. Don't push yourself beyond your limit, it will have a negative impact on your work and you will eventually begin to look for ways to avoid taking further classes.
Q: Do you have the space to work on projects?
If you will be painting, you will need to work in an area where paint spills and splatters are not an issue. Acrylic paint is permanent when dry (in approx 10 minutes), and it can not be removed from clothing, carpets or furniture!
Q: What would YOU like to paint/draw?
So often I've selected objects to draw or paint in class, only to have one or two students reject it and go off on their own in a completely different direction. It left me to wonder, how could they could possibly be learning anything from me??
While it's perfectly fine to do your own thing, it defeats the purpose of paying someone to teach you! Let your teacher know what you are interested in drawing/painting so that he/she can ensure your happiness, feed your creativity, hold your attention, and plan the lesson accordingly! Every teacher wants their students to be happy and successful in their endeavors - it is a source of pride and inspiration!
