Mud Dog Drum Studio is all about learning how to play the drums correctly and the confidence that comes with being a drummer!
We have a large studio space with multiple drum kits for one-on-one instruction and we’re always set up to record your lesson.

Take our “Studio Drumming” courses and you can learn first hand how to approach the instrument in a recording studio setting using your newly acquired advanced musicianship skills.
I have been teaching students from all ages and skill levels for over twenty years and still, the best part of what I do is seeing the look on my students face when they learn a new song for the first time and they’re able to play along, or when they gain the confidence from learning a new concept or technique and how applying that technique to a groove or fill expands they’re understanding of the instrument.
Helping them apply their talents and skills artfully and musically is the most fulfilling experience for me. My training at William Paterson University in classical percussion as well as contemporary drum set allows me a unique perspective on the instrument and the ability to teach across a broad spectrum of styles and genres. Keeping that diversity in my playing as well as my teaching is one of the strongest motivational forces for me.

I was brought into my towns High School marching band when I was only a 6TH grader to teach the upperclassmen in the drum line their parts. It wasn’t easy to get and hold their attention but once I did, I realized I had a knack for teaching drums and began my own teaching practice that has been thriving ever since...
I studied privately for many years before continuing my formal training at William Paterson University. Since graduating with a degree in Music Education I have continued to teach, study and expand my musical repertoire. I have been teaching drums and percussion for over 25 years, working with students ages 7 to 77, from the hobbyist to the working professional.

I ask a lot of questions about the students listening taste, experience, goals and personality so I can better understand where they want to take their playing. Then I put together a comprehensive lesson plan that will set them on the right path.
I have worked with a wide variety of students from working professional adults to young(and old) aspiring beginner drummers. I have also had success teaching students with learning disabilities as well as those recovering from brain injuries who needed help regaining their balance and coordination.
Make sure you get along with your teacher on a personal level but most importantly trust the teacher you are hiring is a certified, professional and is teaching you properly. Be sure they are not leaving out any information that may lead to gaps in your learning that will need to be filled later in your career.
I recently saw Saturday Night Live Alum Fred Armisen and his “Stand-Up for Drummers” show at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood. A thoroughly hilarious comedian and drummer (along with some very special guest drummers) performs stand-up material, music, and sketches for an audience of fellow drummers. I highly recommend it for any musician.

Mike is firstly a rock solid drummer. In addition to that he is also a really good producer. He plays pretty much any genre you can think of. Mike is a music dictionary and this makes him a great source for new and old music styles and trends. He has been a drummer for most of his life, if you’re looking to learn drums the right way, mike is your man!
Professional, Helpful, Patient, Effective. These are all things that encompass what makes Mud Dog Studios and Mike Holowatch so great. Over my 6 years now working with Mike I can say that my playing, understanding, love, and passion for making music and playing drums has grown far beyond what I ever thought I could do. Working in different music styles, rhythms, beats, as well as having a large focus on technique which is always important.
If you ever have a chance to work with Mike I would wholly recommend you take the chance. His methods, knowledge, experience, make for a worthwhile experience any time you are working with him.

I learned a lot in the year that I took lessons with Michael, he was very easy to follow and he took his time to make sure I understood what he was showing me and he would make sure I could execute the technique properly instead of just passing it over just to get to the "good stuff". I am not a drummer, I only took lessons for a year so I could say I did and because I love drums but I am confident, with what I learned from Michael, that I could teach someone rudimentary drumming if there was ever someone that wanted me to show them the basics of drumming. I still have my lesson book which I refer to often and I still drum from time to time. Michael also introduced me to some music I never heard, which was awesome and a bonus! I hope that whoever takes lessons from Michael is as blessed as I was and still am from his teaching.
