About Rachel
I have been working in the California Education System since 2010. I have worked in the following capacities:
- Kindergarten - 3rd Grade Reading Intervention Specialist
- 3rd-5th Grade Reading Teacher
- 9th & 12th Grade English Language Arts Teacher
- Creative Writing Teacher
- ESL Tutor
I began teaching preschool, then moved to Kindergarten, and quickly realized I enjoyed working with students in the areas of Reading and Language Arts. I worked as a Reading Intervention Specialist, (ESL included) for several years before becoming a reading teacher, and later--a High School Enlish Language Arts Instructor. I have also tutored college ESL students.
I have a Bachelor of Science degree & A Master of Arts in Education, with a concentration in Curriculum Development.

I like to conduct an online skype or facetime interview with prospective & new students before beginning a course of instruction to clarify the student's goals, assess a student's current skill levels, and identify areas for growth.
After completing the intro interview, I like to come to an agreement with the student about the course of study and method of instruction that will be used in our sessions and to determine the day and time for future online sessions.
I have worked with students from a wide range of backgrounds and ability levels, including students from ESL backgrounds,students who test far below statewide bench marks, struggling readers, and students requiring I.E.P.'s and Reading Intervention Programs.
You can excel at anything if you are determined, motivated, and willing to stretch yourself. You can always find a way to make an assignment more fun and interesting!
I loved teaching 12th Grade Brisith Literature & Creative Writing because it gave me the ability to share my passion with my students, hook them on the classic stories and share the rich history of their authors' backgrounds, and teach important grammatical skills, while developing and inspiring new writers.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's good for students to be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses as a writer and/or reader, and to have at least a general idea of what areas they need to work on, grow in, and develop.

Details
I charge $30-$45 per hour, depending on the number of hours per week requested. Students who book sessions lasting more than one hour receive the lesser rate per hour.
