About Rebecca
I teach high school students the skills needed to become strong, independent learners.
I've been a substitute for many years, and work exclusively in high schools, so I understand the needs and struggles of teens when it comes to English class and beyond.
My master's in secondary English education is from WGU, and I have a bachelor's in science.
American literature is my jam, but any type of literature or reading comprehension needs are right up my alley. I have a knack for explaining things in a way that struggling students can understand because I was once a struggling student!
Helping students see the big picture of a text and appreciating the elements of literature is the cornerstone to critical reading, and I do just that by breaking down texts *with* students so they can create meaningful connections to what they are reading and their own experiences.
In terms of writing, I help students organize their thoughts into strong outlines and essays. The formulaic approach has proven successful time and again, and I see students become independent very quickly with my brand of skill building in this area.
I'm also an editor and a writer in my spare time, so that lends nicely to tutoring.
Beyond that, I'm a history lover and can help with history as well as social studies.
Let's get started today so your student can have a strong start to the new school year!

During the initial session, I spend time getting to know the strengths and areas of improvement, and, depending on the student, might look at some previous assignments that they struggled on and talk about what they had trouble with, what they might they improve upon, and how they might do that.
From there, I work with the student and parent(s) to create a list of areas that need working on and assess the student's learning style in order to make future sessions a success.
