About John
I am a young educator who is an expert in professional and academic writing, media literacy and study skills. I believe that every student has the potential to achieve their goals, and it's my job to bring passion and patience to help them get there.
In my day job I work as a paraprofessional at Gateway Middle School in San Francisco, California. I help students with a range of learning difficulties, giving them support and services as detailed in their IEPs. When given the opportunity to work together in a separate setting, I often find that my students productivity and confidence grows exponentially. Also, we're able to connect in a way that it makes it easier for me to make the content relevent and useful to the student.
I graduated from Ithaca College with a bachelors degree in journalism. I'm currently studying at the University of San Francisco to earn an English teaching credential and a Masters in Educational Technology. I have extensive experience working with all age groups through my time as a lacrosse coach, swimming coach and outdoor instructor.
First, there's a never ending supply of "aha" moments. This is when the student genuinely buys into the lesson and is able to advance the material forward. Those are the moments that give me so much joy. The learning process can often be a grueling non-linear progression, featuring many setbacks along the way. Helping a student overcome that adversity is incredibly satisfying experience.
Second, I love connecting with so many diverse personalities and backgrounds. Kids keep my soul young and my optimism high! I enjoy being able to work closely with the next generation of thinkers.
