About Michael

I am an English teacher who enjoys helping young people understand English so that they can reach their academic goals.

Teaching during this pandemic is rough, but students have remained my highest priority! I will not complicate things. I will teach in a way that the student can understand the content best.

I always welcome parent involvement and input to the extent that the parent desires it.

I worked with teenagers in foster care for three years while in college, but I wanted to spend more time with them. After my time in college, I decided to become a youth pastor at a church that cared very much about young people, and I remained there for another three years. Now, I have moved into full-time education with teenagers and young people from all backgrounds, and I love every second of it!



I carry a certification to teach English Language Arts and Reading to students grade 7 through 12 in the state of Texas. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Leandership from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and currently serve as a teacher of English in one of Texas' high school leadership academies.

I want to learn about the student and how they are currently engaging with the content and their teacher. This will tell me much of what I need to know in terms of the students strengths and frustrations with the content or teaching method.

The first session is often simply learning about how the student can learn beat and where their greatest need for tutoring currently lies. 




The vast majority of students that I teach are of minority populations and of a lower economic status. 78% of my students are Hispanic and English language learners, 13% are African American, and about 5% are Caucasian. 



Make sure that your teacher makes an effort to understand how you learn. The greatest obstacle for a student's learning is the disconnect between them and the teacher. 



Closing the first semester of this school year, many of my students had gotten behind because of the troubles presented by COVID-19. For the two weeks leading up to the end of the semester, I scheduled multiple personal Zoom calls with students and parents to get the students to a place of understanding so that they would end the semester with a passing grade. This is because I care about the individual student and not the bottom line failure or passing rate in my class.



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students would do well to think about specific problems they are dealing with before asking their teacher for more direction. This allows the student to make the most of their time with the teacher, and it allows the teacher to give clear, specific instruction which helps the student.
