Find out more about Banuki

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Approximately 2 years ago when I had the privilege to work as a year 7 Science teacher where I realized my capability in explaining something deep in a simple way. It also made me realize how rewarding teaching is which motivated me to take up this path.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and English. My favourite subject to teach would be Biology, simply because it never gets boring as there is a lot of explaining to do with fascinating pictures. However, i have to admit that it's quite tiring to talk non-stop. Physics is undoubtedly a little challenging to teach as it's hard to explain what you can't see but it's always rewarding when the student grasp the idea clearly.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I definitely did. A lot of teachers along my journey had been very helpful but one of the teachers that I truly admired was my Bio teacher who never missed an important point and was extremely organized and eloquent with her thoughts and notes.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, no doubt! Being open-minded is crucial as well because at times when you are mistaken, you have to be humble enough to be corrected by your student.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The most memorable memory was when my science teacher dressed herself as a pregnant lady which was hilarious and assigned the class to 4 sections where one would diagnose the condition, one would give advice in preventions, one would explain the benefits on advantages of breast feeding and others would act as nurses. She would come to each section with the huge tummy and listen to us explain and it was extremely fun as we got to rotate ourselves among the sections while enjoying every bit of it.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the struggles I faced was when annotating past paper questions during discussions. There isn't enough space for you to fully explain the thought process and has to only mention the key points. However, I have gotten better at it as I now use a clear whiteboard to explain the question and the thought process and then refer back to the question paper and answer briefly with the key points.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about Biology, to be honest which is why I enjoy explaining and revisiting all of those lengthy chapters. I also find teaching to be rewarding and fulfilling which is always an advantage.
  • What makes you a Super Teacher?

Perhaps my professionalism. I am confident that I am very organized and professional when it comes to tutoring and communicating with students as well as parents. Also, I stay true to what I am able to offer.
