About Alexandra

When having trouble with particular course material I believe what hinders many students’ learning is approaching problems with the mindset that this is something they “don’t understand.” I do my best to get to know the student and tailor my approach to the problem to fit the individual. I’m good at listening which I believe is what makes me an effective communicator.

I’ve always enjoyed all sorts of scholastic pursuits, particularly math. Aside from enjoying the subject matter, I enjoy working with a student for an extended period, which allows me to watch the student’s growth. I think the relationship between a teacher and student is most successful when it feels like teamwork.

I am not a teacher, nor have I studied teaching, but I have tutored for children I used to babysit, for family members, and for friends throughout college. I enjoy math very much and have been told by those I’ve helped that I’m skilled at communicating the process/idea to someone who needs help understanding the material.

I have completed 4 years at the University of Delaware taking math and mechanical engineering courses. During my time there and beyond attending UD I was babysitter, which gave me years of experience with children whose ages range from 8-15.

Initially I like to schedule a meet & greet. During the meet & greet I can ask the student about the course I’ll be aiding them in and find out what they have covered so far, how they performed on previous assignments, if they are provided with a course outline, and what textbook/materials they need or are provided with.

I have the most experience tutoring college students in college-level math courses, but I also have tutored middle school students.

Students in search of a tutor should look for someone who not only has a firm grasp on the course material but who also able to communicate with the student on a high level. A good tutor must be able to understand the student’s questions and areas of confusion, as well as effectively communicate the information back to the student.

I recently took a hiking trip up to Mohonk Mountain in New Paltz, NY. The weather was gorgeous and the view from the top of the mountain is 1,500 ft above sea-level. The view allowed me to see 5 states at once.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should:

a.     Consider areas of weakness or confusion in their coursework.

b.     Find specific questions or assignments that give the student trouble.

Sometimes students are not sure what exactly they don’t understand about the coursework and may not know which questions to ask. When going over particular problems a tutor can typically see the root of the misunderstanding and strengthen that area so they both can continue moving forward in the coursework.
