About John

I love to teach; I especially enjoy working with students who have experienced difficulty in a traditional classroom setting.

I have taught middle school math, science and technology since 2011 and have worked with elementary school students in programs like Energy Express (an award-winning, 6-week, summer reading and nutrition program for children living in West Virginia’s rural and low-income communities) and various after school and summer enrichment programs.

I excel at helping students with reading, reading comprehension, rudimentary and intermediate math skills from 1st - 9th grade.

My super power is helping students understand word problems. Together we will accomplish incredible things.

If your student has an interest in electronics, robotics or coding we should definitely talk. I have been a hobby roboticist and have used Spehero, Lego, Ozobot, EV3, Microbit, Snap circuits, Python, code.org, Scratch, Hopscotch, repl and many other products and platforms both in my classroom and as a matter of personal enjoyment.

Educational background and professional skills achievements:

BA - Math, Science Education 5-9 with nearly 10 years classroom teaching experience

- Praxis MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE (0439) Passed November 13, 2010

- Praxis ELEM ED: SCIENCE SUBTEST (5005) Passed July 13, 2016

I enjoy working with students who need and want extra help. Not every student will be a math or computer whiz, but the point of tutoring is to be your best self. I work every day to bring out the best in each of my students.

I came to teaching late in life, starting college for the first time at age 35. I was a self-taught and self-employed computer guy for 19 years after leaving high school. At college, I majored in math and science education and I would be hard-pressed to choose one over the other. I love both.

I have taught middle school math, science, and technology since graduating from college in 2011. I have worked as a tutor for many afterschool and summer programs with kids of all ages and backgrounds. I love hands-on science and solving math word problems.

It is important to me to understand what my student hopes to get from the time we spend working together. Setting clear expectations helps hold my student accountable and lets me know we are making progress towards a reasonable goal.

In addition, I like to know a student's interests so I can provide relevant real-life examples and engage my students in more than one area.

I have worked with 1st - 9th grade. However, most of my experience has been with students in grades 5-8. I seem to connect with kids who enjoy technology and kids who are curious about robots, electronics, coding, and the like.

If your student struggles with math, especially word problems, we should talk. I truly enjoy working on word problems and helping kids learn to see them as a challenge or a puzzle to be solved.

Make sure you're a good fit. It is imperative that you can find common ground and set expectations and a time commitment from the beginning. Everyone gets more out of the tutoring experience when they go into it with Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reasonable, and Time conscious goals.

I recently built a tiny house 14' x 28' that is pretty high tech. All of the switches and many of my outlets are Alexa enabled and almost every aspect of my home is voice-controlled - even my coffee pot. I start my day with "Alexa, start my coffee, please" and end with "Alexa, goodnight" (which turns out all of the indoor lights and turns on my porch lights).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is it I want to learn? What do I need to learn to be successful? What would make this subject more interesting to me?

Do I want to pass or excel? Both are admirable goals but each requires a different focus as well as time and energy commitment.

What do I want to do with my life after school and how does this subject relate to my ultimate goal?

My typical rate is $32 per hour but I am flexible when necessary and charge a little more for subjects that require more extensive lesson planning. If your student does better with shorter lessons be sure to let me know as I am often able to work with students for a 30-45 minutes several times a week instead of one marathon session.
