About Sarah
I have 3 years of k-12 math tutoring experience with Mathnasium, with students in classes everywhere from basic arithmetic to algebra to calculus. I myself am a student, so I understand how to navigate different kinds of homework and ways to approah different subjects that make sense to all age groups! Some background about me: I took Algebra I as a freshmen in high school (as well as Pre-Calculus as an independent study). I took AP Calculus AB/BC as a sophomore and received a 5 on the AP exam. As a junior, I took Linear Algebra/Intro to Calc III, and as a senior I took AP Statistics (and also received a 5 on that exam as well).
I have always enjoyed math, and I love helping students who are sturggling in their respective classes (or who just want to get ahead) better understand the material so they feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed over the course of their mathematical career!
As a sophomore in high school, I began working part-time at my local Mathnasium. There, I worked with 1-4 students at a time, for one hour each.
I graduated as valedictorian in my high school class, and while in high school I took every higher lever math class that was availabel to me (Honors Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Statistics, Linear Algebra, and Intro to Calc III). While in high school I was also a math tutor for three years at my local Mathnasium. There, I worked with 1-4 students at a time, working on both specific homework problems and strengthening foundational math skills as well.

I think it's important to build a relationship with the student, so I first like to get to know them a bit (grade, what level of math they're in/what kind of math they're learning, how they're feeling about their class the material, etc.). If there is a specific classwork or homework problem they're having trouble with, I walk them through how we would go about solving it and what specifically they are having trouble with. If it's more of a broader concept they're struggling with and not a specific classwork/homework problem, I can come up with example problems and we can walk through them together to figure out where the difficulty is. In either case, I make sure to guide them to the answer rather than just giving the answer, because I believe students learn better when they are an active part of solving the problem instead of passively observing someone else solve it.
While at Mathnasium, I worked with students in grades k-12, on subjects everywhere from basic arithmetic to algebra to calculus.
Be familiar with their background in the subject and see if their overall method and approach are compatible with what you're looking for.
During my time as a Mathnasium tutor, I worked with one high school student while he was studying Algebra II and Pre-Calc, as well as with SAT Prep. A few months after I had left Mathnasium (because I had started college), he contacted me after receiving his SAT scores, thanking me for helping him improve him score during our time together. This was a really great meassage to receive, since we had worked closely together for a number of months and were able to see the material, tangible results of our efforts.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are the specific issues you're having? Is it a problem with newly introduced content or trouble with older, foundational topics that need to be strengthened? Are there specific classwork/homework assignments that you're struggling with?
