About Miriam

It is my belief that the lesson should be a time for problem solving and helping the student by creating a model for practice which they can remember and use at home. Students should be given meaningful and inspiring tools for real-life musicianship. Each student deserves to have lessons that meet the standards of high-quality musicianship and yet are tailored to fit various personalities, learning styles, and circumstances. Therefore, I use the teaching method that is the best format, style, and level for the student.

I am a nationally certified teacher of music with the Music Teachers National Association, and have performed as a collaborative pianist and vocalist at schools, churches and musical theatre venues across the Southeast. Each year I serve as an adjudicator for local, state, and national events. My students have won awards at local and state wide competitions, performed in master classes with master clinicians at state and national conferences, and have received Music scholarships at institutions across the U.S.

I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching piano and voice two students of all ages for over 27 years, and feel blessed to have the potential opportunity to share music with you and or your child.

My earliest memories in life are of sitting on the piano bench at age 3 with my mother (who was a piano teacher.)  I was exposed to music and the teaching of music on a regular basis, especially since my three older siblings were also involved in piano studies and band.  Music was always an important part of who I was.  During my first two years of college, I was a music education student at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.  Although I loved music, I still felt unsure as to what I really wanted to do once I graduated from college.  Despite my doubts and indecision, my piano professor, Dr. Betty Sue Shepherd, conducted "piano classes" in which her students would perform for each other once per week.  As each pianist performed, we were required to write confidential critiques.  One day Dr. Shepherd said, "Miriam...did you know that you write more on your critiques than any other students?  In fact, your critiques are helpful.  I want to share some of your ideas with the students."  This was one of the first of many sparks that would lead me to teaching piano and voice privately.  During January of 1989, I took an education class that required me to observe and assist a band teacher at a high school in Birmingham.  Although I had enjoyed playing the trumpet in my middle school and high school band a few years before, I felt so out of place.  The band director seemed to sense how I felt and suggested that I give private lessons to a young trumpet player that he believed had potential.  Over the next few weeks, I worked with this young trumpet player and he actually began to improve!  As I taught him, for the first time I found my "teaching voice."  However, as the semester moved along, I became more and more discouraged about what the future might hold for me.  Thankfully, my discouragement turned to decision, as I one day bore the brunt of the unwillingness of a teacher who would not help me.  I was angry, frustrated, and at the end of my rope when I thought, "if I were the teacher, I would go to the ends of the earth to find a way to help my student!"   It was as if a lightning bolt had hit me. Through my tears I suddenly knew what I was called to do. At that moment I saw the big picture of all that had happened to lead me to this decision.  During the summer of 1989 my sister suggested that I meet a piano professor she knew at a college in the town where she lived.  After a few phone calls and some Divine intervention, I was able to meet Mrs. Mary Ann Knight, who was the Piano Pedagogy professor at Shorter College, of Rome, Georgia (one of the only colleges that offered an undergraduate Piano Pedagogy degree in the southeast at that time).  A few weeks later, I made the decision to transfer to Shorter College, and studied with Mrs. Knight over the next three years.  As her student I grew to love teaching more each day.  Looking back I am grateful for each teacher who influenced, encouraged, and helped me find the right path.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in Piano Pedagogy from Shorter College.  I have 28 years of teaching experience and am a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music with the Music Teachers National Association.  I attend music teacher conferences, seminars, and workshops on an annual basis.

The first step in working with a new student is getting to know the student.  Typically, I will ask the student questions about what interests them, including their favorite school subjects, hobbies, activities, favorite music styles, etc.  I feel that it is important to establish trust and raport with students because we all usually do our best in an environment where we feel comfortable.

Secondly, I will engage the student in a few activities that assist me in assessing the student's level and musical abilities.  Some examples might include having the student "echo" rhythm patterns, identifying musical symbols/terms, and sight reading (for transfer students).  Students who have studied music in the past may be invited to perform music they have previously learned.

If an interview has previously occured, I will introduce the beginning students to the piano keyboard, finger numbers, and some basic ear training.  Beginners also receive an assignment notebook at this lesson which includes worksheets and activities for at home practice, with music books assigned afterwards.  Transfer students may review music they have previously studied, and may be given additional technical exercises and repertoire.

Students and parents are always invited to ask me questions regarding their musical studies.  I am happy to go over the studio policies and practice recommendations at the first lesson as well.

I have worked with students of all ages, personalities, abilities, and learning styles.
