About Adi

It's all about passion and fun. Learning an instrument as an extra-curricular activity requires hard work and dedication. If it's not fun, then there's no motivation to continue! Finding that balance between fun and structure is what it's all about. Encouraing students to stick with it, and creating those unique perosnal connections is at the core of musical success.

Making a difference. If it's making a student smile becaue they learned something they never thought they would be able to do, or they composed something they ended up liking, it's all about gaining a skill that we can use to express ourselves.

I started teaching by first tutoring my mentor teacher's students who needed extra help when I was 14, and then taking my mentor teacher's student overflow when I was 18 years old.

I have been teaching piano for over 5 years, and playing for over 13 years. In Elementary School, I was the piano player for the school choise. In Middle School, I was part of the school band and orchestra. I travelled with the school's performing arts academy to perform at elementary schools, and was chosen to play in the Olympic Cultural Festival in China (2008). In High School, I was part of a world renown jazz band, and competed in many different festivals and events.

In addition to my piano teaching, I have worked with youth (ages 4-18) in leadership training programs, experiential education programs, and many other settings. I have been involved in curriculum planning as well as child development courses.

The first few lessons are all about creating that connection, and learning about the student. Learning an instrument, especially as an extra-curricular, only works if the student is motivated and enjoys is. The first few lessons are designed to cover the very basics of piano and to learn the best learning methods that work for the student as well a the student's musical interests and aspirations. After about 2 lessons, I begin introducing songs/pieces. I try to have students select what pieces they wany to learn, and adjust versions for the level of expertese.

For younger students (4-5 or younger), it can take a few more lessons before we begin to learn songs/pieces. This depends on their knoweldge of the alphabet, and basic math skills (counting, etc).

I have worked with students from 4 years old to about 13 years old.

Make sure your child likes your teacher. It's all about the connection, and if the teacher can motivate and inspire your child to practice during the week. Without practice, there is no progress, and it's very easy for students to get frustrated when they don't see improvement.

It's also important to give the teacher a chance (sometime the parent likes the teacher, but the student is hesitant). My parents always had a rule that we had to try something 6 times before we quit.
