About Tony
While I took classical piano lessons as a child my life changed when, as a teenager, I met the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin (among many others) at parties that featured live dance orchestras. I loved that foxtrot beat and I wanted to play what they were playing. If I heard a tune that I liked I would go up to the band leader, ask him for the name of it, then rush out the next day to G. Schirmer Inc. Sheet Music to buy the sheet or a whole book by the same composer. Over 50 years of playing in small clubs, restaurants and for private parties I’ve amassed a sheet music collection that I would love to share with you.
If you can feel a beat, carry a tune, remember some lyrics and you enjoy listening to music from the Golden Era of American popular song (1920’s > 1980’s); the songs Sinatra sang, Broadway show tunes, movie themes or Bossa Nova numbers we will enjoy each other’s company.

Depending on a student's level of knowledge we will spend some time getting familiar with the keyboard; the white & black keys, the different scales, how chords are built, major & minor keys, piano dynamics > articulating different moods/emotions by playing louder/softer/faster/slower
Typically adults who are familiar with songs of the "Great American Songbook", a loosely defined set including the most popular and enduring songs from the 1920's to the 1970's that were created for Broadway theatre, musical theatre and Hollywoods musical film.
As I am enthusiast of popular music, I encourage my students to be interested to study a song's lyrics and think about the story or emotion the composer was trying to convey when he/she wrote it. (I don't teach students interested only in classical music)
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals? To play for yourself? To play for others? To compose your own songs? How much time are you willing to devote to practice? Training your ear and your hands to make pleasing sounds on the piano doesn't happen overnight.
