About Dounya
I am a freelance tutor who has a passion for foreign language learning and teaching. I tutor Arabic, Spanish and English. I have been asked to be an Arabic Teacher's Assistant, an English Writing Center tutor and Spanish Teacher's Assistant during my undergraduate studies at Bryn Mawr College, however due to my work load I was unable to accept these offers. Now that I am a graduate, I have more time to focus on my tutoring services which I am ecstatic about. I have had private tutoring experience and have worked with children one on one to improve their literacy in the English language through my time working at Summer Learning Collaborative since the Summer of 2019. I have been used as an Arabic interpreter at Nationalities Service Center as an intern working under the Refugee Resettlement and Green program since 2020, have worked on translating material from English to Arabic, and voluntarily taught English as a Second Language (ESL) courses simultaneously for this organization throughout the summer. Therefore, I have ample amount of experience lesson planning and teaching from both of these positions and other freelancing opportunities. I am committed to helping students achieve their foreign language goals. As a passionate foreign language learner myself, I strive to encourage and challenge my students to reach beyond their goals. Attaining proficiency in any foreign language is achievable; I am here to guide, refine and uplift the skills my students already have with the teaching tools and resources I have acquired from my experiences as a teacher and student.
I love seeing my students reach their goals. Whether it be to pass a foreign language class or master a foreign language, seeing my students progress is what I enjoy the most about the work I do. Seeing my students achieve their goals makes me even happier and it is why I do what I do every single day.

My typical process for working with a new student is determining their starting level through a practice test to see what they may be primarily struggling with. Next, I would ask them for their preferences on what language skill area they would like to focus on primarily or grow in during our sessions (reading, listening, writing, speaking or a mix and match of these skills). I value my student's input in their learning process as learning is a collaborative and joint effort between teacher and student. Therefore, the student will have the opportunity to convey what kind of teaching style works best for them, their preferences in how lesson plans or taught depending on whether they are a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, learner, etc. I will model my lesson plans based on my students' learning preferences and interests. Getting to know my student, their level and their learning preferences will take place during the first lesson. Afterwards, we will establish a routine that works best for the student in their learning journey, whether that be having a more flexible schedule where students get to lead what they would like to work on each session or if they want the tutor to have more say in how each session should look like. This will be established in the first session as well. In regards to homework and the resources we will be working with, if the student feels they need a bit more practice in a certain area, I will give them homework to complete before the next session and they turn it into me anytime before the next session via whatever medium works best for the student. Some students prefer more rigid and structured tutoring sessions, and others prefer much more flexibility and I am here to offer both/cater to each student's individual need.

Dounya is such a passionate teacher! She was determined to help me with my beginner's Spanish course. I struggled with reading and conjugations, and she came up with an incredible way to help me remember conjugation rules and have more confidence when I read.
